It's true, I sold my lifted Ram 4x4 today, and have been shopping like crazy for a 97 and up F-150 4x4 ex cab. I found a few kinda local I'm gonna check out tomorow, and a bunch more not so local lol. Any things I might need to be on the lookout for as far as bad things? My dad has one he's hit 200k on, and so far been a good rig...

Great choice! My Dad has an 04 FX4, first year of the newer body style. Has been a great truck so far except the typical Ford wasted lower ball joints and a back window that rattles a lot, no matter what the dealer did to it wouldnt stop. Other than those minor things it's all been maintenance. Post up some pics when you get one.

i would stay away from the 97-02 f150 with the 5.4 or 4.6 or the v10 they have the problem with blown the spark plug out of the heads

nah, I believe that was just the early lightnings.

I have a 97 with a 4.6 v8 and its at over 140k and runs perfect without even a light on, I drive it everyday and we have owned it since it was new. Its had a starter, plugs, belts/hoses, heater core, and a sensor. Thats it! thats just basic crap.

I know several people with around this same year with the 4.6 and 5.4 that have close to 200k without issue.

Now the v6 they put in the f-150 is shit, most of the ones i see always have something wrong with them plus whats the point in a v6 with a full size.

i see well my expedition has blown the plug twice and has the 5.4 and i talked to a ford tech about it and he said it was a common issue with those engines

Normal things such as rust.

Spark plugs popping out of heads for all Romeo and windsor 4.6's or 5.4's regardless of induction method.

Exhaust manifold attachment nuts rust off and break off studs in head (especially pass side) even if the truck has no rust on it. PITA to replace.

Also imperfect sealing surfaces on Pass side head had some leak oil. Bulletins were posted to replace gaskets. I had one that needed the head replaced. It would have
a light/moderate oil leak at the passenger side head towards the rear near the firewall.

Stay away from the 4.2 V-6's altogether, they have weak bottom ends and are not high mileage motors.

Good luck it is a buyers market.

For work, I have a 2000 E-250 van with the 5.4 in it. I don't know how many spark plugs have blown out of it. I think all of them at least once. Coil packs are giving me fits now. Then again, mine has 140,000 miles and 3000 plus hours of cleaning time on it. When it runs good, it runs good!!!! Good luck in your search.
My 05 Expedition is a dream to drive. No complaints so far. Have had it since dec 08.

Get one with the 7.3L PowerStroke Diesel and you'll have it for life.

Be vary leary of the newer 6.0L PowerStroke Diesel !! They have crankshaft issues!

They tend to SNAP in 1/2 around the 150,000 mile mark!!

I found one, I'm keeping an eye on. '99 F150 Lariat, 4X4, 5.4. Price is close, but haven't really got to talk to seller.

I thought about starting a thread, about this, so I'm glad you did it for me!

That may not be any better. The fleet I manage currently is all GM trucks and one 3/4 ton van. My local fleet has higher miles (145k, 208k, 212k) the other trucks for regional use all have less than 100k. Some of those trucks are on their 2nd and 3rd transmissions. Don't get me started on column bearings, front dif seals, steering rack seals, front suspension ball joints etc. My GMT9000's with electrical gremlins, And no they aren't hauling heavy loads and all maintenance is coordinated correctly. The best trucks we have had were older fords that we racked up 300k plus on(all gas motors) and then sold to employees who still drive them. The GM dealers have really taken care of me on volume purchases, way more competitive than the blue ovals quoted. Until the Ford franchises get a little more aggressive with fleet sales I'll keep wrenching on the bowties for now.

I bought a 2000 f150 over the summer lifted with swampers pretty nice truck. Has 222,000 miles round and about, but it also blew a head gasket recently. I think ill just drop a junk yard motor in it. Other than the blown head gasket I wouldn't trade the ruck for anything I love it!

Has there ever been a diesel in an f150?(serious question) lolNope. Believe it or not, the Ranger actually had a diesel engine at one time! Back in the 80s.

Ford has actually looked at putting in a 4.4L V8 Turbo-Diesel in F150s!

http://www.fordf150.net/diesel/

I don't know what the status of that project is though. Maybe Beefcake will jump in here...

They did put a deisel in a few 150's in the last 2 years. I live near Lima, and was sitting at a stoplight one day by a new f150. Very nice rig, when we took off, I heard the deisel rattle and turbo spool up. I had to look twice to make sure I was seeing what I was seeing lol. I came straight home and looked it up, and they did do it.

Well I sold the JD trailer too lol. Yea Aaron, she go by by. I couldnt say no, I got the asking price, no haggling whatsoever. Keep in mind, she had TONS of miles on her, I drove it 35,000 miles, and actually made money on the truck! Not to mention the tug-a-trucks, mud bogs, ponds, rivers, creeks, and various other off road adventures I went through in it lmao! I will never say anything bad about a dodge gasser in my life! 297,000 miles and all I had to replace was a driveshaft in the rear, and rebuild the trans 1 1/2 years ago ;)

INSANEBA
01-22-2010, 09:47 AM
Well I bought one! I drove about 1 1/2 hr's away last night to Aubur, IN and looked at a 99 F-150. Sorry Bobby, thought it was a 98 til I looked at the title. She's a burghandy ex cab short bed 3rd door 4x4 off road with the 4.6 auto in it. Runs like a champ, has a rebuilt trans with 2 1/2 yrs left on the warranty, new tires on factory rims, very clean body and nice clean grey cloth interior. I drove 70mph all the way home, and used less than 1/4 tank! I was gonna go for an 02 and newer, but the price on this rig was too hard to pass up! The guy I got it from got a dui in it new years eve, and needed the $$ to clean up his mess. I'll post pics later today after I shine her up lol. I know about all the probs listed here, and she checks out good so far! My dad has a 99 5.4 truck that he's got 220,000 on with only a water pump, coil packs, and tires being replaced... So look for a small lift, and a nice set of 20's and maybe 33's to show up on it soon, oh and another trailer to match Aaron lol...

I have an 03 FX4 ext cab. These trucks dont sell for what kbb says. Mine in kbb was almost 12k in "good condition" private party the last time I checked. I will be selling it for way less than that if I sell it. Send me a pm if you want to come look at it.

Man that would have been nice to know when I bought mine cause mine blew on the passenger side at the on the back close to the firewall. When we put the coolant system under pressure it shot out of the intake side of the head like a fountain. O well for what I paid for the truck I can put a new motor in it and still have less than $3500 in it.

Negative on the OEM F150 Diesels (Prior OR Present).

The F150 you spotted up in Lima had to be Modded OR maybe a "Test Mule".

Ford has yet to install a diesel engine in F150s (as OEM) from the factory.

Probably a test mule then, I remember seeing a manufacturers plate on the back of it now that you mention it. I remember it well though, it was white with a goldish/silver 2 tone along the bottom. Very nice looking truck!
