I am putting together a Windsor-powered '84 Volvo 242. I found the car on Craigslist last fall, powered by the Volvo B230F 4-cyl with an AW71 automatic transmission. The car ran and drove perfectly and reliably, so I decided to change that. I yanked the the engine, transmission, and harness and sold it off. Now I am putting together the new drivetrain. 5.0 and T5, with a couple little tricks. Nothing too crazy at this point- I just want to get the thing going down the road reliably for now.
Here are a couple progress pics.
The car:

Apparently I am an idiot- I bought an off-the-shelf generic set of 4.000" bore moly rings from Jegs instead of metric rings. That both set me back a few dollars and a few minutes. Oh well. I guess I get to drive up to Columbus again.

Assuming the weather is not horrendous tonight and tomorrow morning, I am going to head to a yard in Columbus that (I have heard) has a '75 244, which has the hood I need to match the single round headlights I switched to. If it is too nasty I will just go skiing instead.

Is this the guy w/ the cream/beige colored with the drk bronze wheels. If so very cool car.
There used to be a guy around the Amelia/Eastgate that had two of them. It was crazy hearing the sound of a Stang coming from the 2 door sedan Volvo's. I always wondered what happened to those cars.
Good luck w/ your build guy. Looks to be rewarding when you're finished.

Slight progress- spent a bunch of hours working on the wiring harness, and making a mount for the computer. Also went to Columbus and FINALLY found a flathood. I heard a rumor there was a 12/74 build 244 in a yard, and made a gozillion calls to every yard around, and figured out where it was, but no one was sure if it was still there. After a bit of trudging through 10" snow through the yard, I finally found it 30 minutes before closing.

I picked up a set of Plasma Moly rings, a Ford Racing windage tray and modified it to work with a rear-sump pan, got an oil pump, solid motor mounts, ARP engine hardware kit along with ARP hardware for the motor mounts, flywheel, etc., Jegs brand clutch fork, March alternator bracket, and a few other goodies.
The rotating assembly is together and ready to go. Tomorrow I am going to weld the oil return bungs in the oil pan and bolt it on.

I got a care package for the 242 from a friend of mine today:

And I laid out and inventoried the $900 Converse swap kit (that I paid $320 for, second hand unused):
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/pietsrock/003-4.jpg
That is everything but the wiring harness adapter, which is on the car already.
These are the pieces of the kit I am actually going to use:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/pietsrock/004-5.jpg
A couple other parts I have collected- 240 manual pedal cluster, A9L (mass air) computer, stock 5.0 MAF and elbow, and a GT hornpad:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/pietsrock/005-5.jpg
All that stuff is the box at the foot of my bed- other chunks are scattered across the county. I brought the timing chain cover with me to work today and hit it with a torch to get a broken bolt out, and tossed it in the trichlorethylene tank to clean it up. Not sure if it will be left natural aluminum or painted blue.
Sorry I have been so picture intensive. I am just kinda stoked about the project, and my girlfriend is getting tired of hearing about it, so I gotta go to the interweb to jabber on about it.

I cleaned up and painted the heads and dropped them on, dummied up the accessories, put the adjustable FPR on the fuel rail, etc. last night. I had a pulley alignment issue- the March alternator bracket put the alternator too far back, so rather than putting spacers behind the alternator bracket mounts, I just stuck a 4-rib serpentine belt on what rides on the rear 4 groove.
The water pump is standard rotation and the correct height to convert a serpentine 5.0 to std rotation when only running a water pump and alternator- to get that pump ask for the aluminum pump that was available for a 1989 Ford Crown Victoria. The crank and water pump pulleys are from some '80s Lincoln Town Car, and the alternator pulley is from a 86+ 5.0 Mustang. The Ford Racing windage tray would not clear a stock Fox body oil pan, but the pan can be pounded to fir around it. See carnage below.

I bought valve covers and a distributor today, and installed the heads. The valve covers were 25 years old and were showing their age, so I degreased and shot them with walnut shells, painted them black, and polished the fins. I had a good used distributor, but it was nasty and old and I decided that I really didn't want to stick an old nasty thing in my shiny new engine, so I bought a remanned distributor and a new ignition control module. I splurged a little and bought an MSD cap and rotor because they look awesome. The heads are now torqued and the valvetrain is in and ready to run. I am still waiting for some of the hardware for the timing chain cover to come in from ARP, so it and the water pump are just bolted on dry with no gaskets at the moment.

This afternoon, I swapped input shafts and bearing retainers in my World Class T5, as the transmission came out of an SN95, and had a longer input shaft. I pulled the old one, then used bearing grease to "glue" the bearing rollers into the input shaft tail, then lubed all the bearings, gear teeth, and seals. I put it together with a thin bead of RTV silicone.

I just drove home a '90 244 M47 car to scavange the front end stuff I need from. There is too much structural rust to make it worth while to replace the blower motor, so the front end from this car, along with the e-codes from my '91 are getting swapped over to the '84. The M47 is headed to my '91, as are the manual windows. It will then be parted to restock my "spares" shed, and the carcass shredded.

Lower intake cleaned and painted...
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/pietsrock/004-12.jpg
I went to the junk yard and pulled some 24# injectors off of a '97 Mk VIII, and nabbed a fuel rail from a GT40P Explorer. The Explorer rail has the feed and return by the firewall, so my fuel line routing will be a little more user-friendly.

I have been racking up the miles on the car. No teething issues so far, other than running out of gas once. When I had the sender out of the tank I must have bent the rod, and at about 1/4 tank I really had no gas. Problem solved, no big deal. I have had it up at the K-mart meet at the Greene a few times now. Now I am in the same boat as all the other benchracers, talking about getting a set of AFRs and a blower. If I can have the car making something that starts with a 4 at the tires, I will be satisfied enough to leave the drivetrain alone and get down to business on the suspension.

It sits as low as I could hang it with out dropping below the scrub line... I didn't want the pan hanging out in the breeze, but a lower CG doesn't hurt, and more hood clearance is nice, especially since I had no idea what intake setup I would end up running.

Finished the hotside piping today, other than the wastegate. The crossover is 2.5, and joins into a single 4 and then to the T6 flange. I am very pleased with the end result. The oil feed is AN4 and draws from a tee on the oil press sender, and the return is AN10 and returns to a 1/2NPT bung on the oil pan.

Thanks man! I kinda want to see what the finished product is going to look like, too! I have no idea... I'm just making it up as I go along, and adding go-fast bits as I find good deals on stuff.

The motor mount adapters are modified Converse Engineering mounts, with fox-style solid motor mounts bolted to them. They are sold as part of a "swap kit" for about $1000. I try to make it a policy to not badmouth people on the internet, but I would suggest shooting me a PM before buying one of their kits.
The transmission mount is just a chunk of 2x2x1/4 mild angle that I heat and beat a little to open up to about 120 degrees, and bolted one side to a stock-style fox T5 trans mount, and the other to a stock Volvo crossmember. I had to run 3/8 spacer blocks under the crossmember attach bolts to get my driveshaft angle right, but it was a very simple process.
When I did my first Volvo 5.0 swap I used Ross' kit, I had problems with it:(
My second Volvo swap was a SBC, I bought the JTR book, it was a great swap manual, with the exception of the rear dist. it was a easier swap IMO.
Looking Great!!!

We are following the same path, then. The next one is an '81 Volvo 245 with an Chevy 350 L98 engine and 700R4 transmission out of an '89 Corvette.

I picked up the wagon a few months ago, and grabbed the Corvette drivetrain a couple weeks ago. I have a quite well-thumbed copy of the JTR book, and jigged up a motor mount crossmember a couple years ago.
I am not sure if it is cool enough to warrant a build thread here, as it is neither a Mustang nor Ford powered. I think I may have been stretching the rules by putting up this build thread...

Oil/air seperator made out of a 1940 Packard 180 oil filter housing:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/pietsrock/045.jpg
Before
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/pietsrock/044.jpg
After
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/pietsrock/043.jpg
The in is on a tangent to the shell, so the oil mist will spin out on the inside of the canister and the air will vent through the push-in breather in the lid.
Also, I tacked up the downpipe:

I'd love to add a v8 to mine. I wanted to add a +T for awhile and still haven't done it. I really enjoy this build since I own a volvo 240 but it also makes me want to tear into my car even more and it runs just fine.

Excellent! I have a bunch of the bits you will need to do a +T when that time rolls around- manifold, intercooler and brackets, piping, oil pan w/ return bung, etc. and have done several of them. Let me know if you need any parts or assistance.

Here's the wheels, I still have the center caps and I don't know where I put the bolts to mount them on though. I had 225/50/15 on them before and they fit onto my 90 Volvo 240. I'm not 100% sure what the offset is but my guess would be 20mm. They are 5x108 and were ordered to fit a Volvo 240. I know two tires are good and two are worn(205/55/15).

Nothing to report- I have been stuck working and have not had time to play. In a related story, the curator of America's Packard here in Dayton found this 1931 Packard Standard 8 coupe in a barn, where it had been sitting for some 30 years on blocks. He drug it in, called me, and I have been tasked with getting it cleaned up, running, and driving before next Friday. When this job is done I can go back to piddling around with the Volvo again. Gotta pay the bills too, eh?
