View Full Version : The Primered Wonder...the endless project

Well i'm bored and decided that it's time to post the diary of a madman, otherwise known as the long and seemingly endless project that i like to call the Primered Wonder (if i ever do paint it..god knows what we'll call it).
The car started out as a 1985 SSP out of Louisville KY and was used by the Kentucky State Patrol. To my knowedge it was retired in '01 (or suffice to say it was titled only one time from '85 to '01 according to the BMV). I got the car from a guy in Cincinnati on a trade. When i got the car, pretty much all of the SSP goodies where gone except for the buck tags which tell you the SSP info of the car. It was being raced by the guy's wife and had a C4 swapped in place of the 5 speed. It was essentially stock except for exhaust and 3.73s in an 8.8 rear end. Here's what she looked like the day i brought her home in 2003:
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee275/EVIL85SSP/Mustang%20Pics%20and%20Videos/Im000754a.jpg
Yeah, that's a Cincinnati Composites "hood" if you can call it that, and it had a fantastic Maaco paint bomb er i mean paint job. I just sold those skinnies to KB1 (lol that's how long i've had'em!).
Shortly after i ditched that hood, put Eibach Pro Kit springs on it and repainted the 10 holes and rocked those for a LONG time:

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee275/EVIL85SSP/Mustang%20Pics%20and%20Videos/IM001945.jpg
As for the engine...well there wasn't a whole lot to look at. It was your typical 200K+ mile engine bay:
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee275/EVIL85SSP/Mustang%20Pics%20and%20Videos/IM000749-1.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee275/EVIL85SSP/Mustang%20Pics%20and%20Videos/IM000752-1.jpg
Just about the only thing left from that mess today is the throttle cable and the breather. That said, that engine right there was one hell of an engine. I don't know if maybe it had been rebuilt or swapped out, but when i pulled it out it was an '85 engine (at least it had E5 heads on it). That engine eventually went 12.8 at 107mph and never once complained about it.
Of course like most people, i got bored and went through a bunch of changed....cleaned it, spray painted stuff, deleted the AC, put on a cheap breather (and now i've gone back to the stocker..lol).

The first tax refund i got after getting it went towards a Tremec 3550 swap with a King Cobra clutch, Mac full length headers, Pro Chamber and cat-back. The car sounded really nice and was a blast to drive and i pretty much cut my teeth on banging gears in this car the first couple years.

Now...here comes the nose story. I had always had a deep inner love for the Pacecar/82 GT noses. The problem was that neither car was very common, and that i also had a deep inner love for coupes, and the two never came from Ford together. I had always talked about finding a nose and swapping it over....talked...because it seemed like it would never happen. Well, by August of '04 it happened. A buddy of mine spotted a car way out in the boonies that looked like it might be for sale for the right price. $200 later, the whole car was being PUSHED home by a Honda Civic in the middle of the night (yeah, seriously) with no headlights or anything. Shortly after, she got her first facelift. This is how Stangbangerz.com first met my car and it was like this for a loooong time:
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee275/EVIL85SSP/Mustang%20Pics%20and%20Videos/007_12.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee275/EVIL85SSP/Mustang%20Pics%20and%20Videos/009_14.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee275/EVIL85SSP/Mustang%20Pics%20and%20Videos/Im002225.jpg
To be honest...it was a tough choice to make. I was torn between what i felt was the right thing to do for the car being an SSP, and what i really wanted to have for a car. In the end i made the choice and put the original nose in storage, which i feel is a safe decision.
At this point i started to try and make it go faster. The next improvements were a Stealth intake, a little bling with some valve covers, and nice new Holley 650dp from Craig (which was the first time i meet that crazy mofo lol).

About this time came the spring '05 cruise in (sadly, i don't have any pics or vids of my first cruise in which was the fall of '04 where i met everyone here...right after having brain surgery). It was a blast.
That's me between the light blue coupe and red hatch..

At some point that year it got primered and a friend started calling it the primered wonder...i thought it was funny. It rolled on some Centerline Autodrags for a while with some mismatched white letter tires..lol. This pretty much wrapped up '05.

According to my picture collection, '06 was a pretty dead year. I got some Welds on it and pretty much everything else was a carry over from '05.
I did some burnouts before the Welds went on:

Here's video of that one http://videos.streetfire.net/video/Tire-off-a-set-of-old-ti_60136.htm
Then come Fall i took it out to the soy bean fields in Mt. Orab and tried to get artsy and take some decent pics of it:

2008 was a pretty sweet year. I finally got around to swapping on some ported '69 351 heads i had been sitting on since '04, and an X303 cam. Without any tuning whatsoever (not even a jet change) the car went 12.8 @ 107. I also finally came into a set of 16 inch ARE mesh wheels that i had been wanting for a long time, and finally got around to swapping out the rusty doors that had been plaguing my car since the day i got it. Unfortunately, due to a hard drive failure i don't have any pics from '08 to current, so a couple videos will have to suffice.

2009, things really started to pick up. In the spring i had plans to finally get the car painted...but an ad in the classifieds for a 347 was too tempting and it found its way into my car.

Once that got dropped in, Craig, Adam and the boys at Cincy Speed put it on the rollers and pounded out some very nice dyno numbers.

After that, me and my buddy Kenny got crazy and decided to pretty much rewire the engine bay by removing all the old dry rotted bits and pieces that were no longer being used and redo the ignition system.

That pretty much wrapped up '09. Didn't get to take the new combo to the track, but that's going to happen this spring. Here's some before and after shots of the rats nest that we got rid of with the wiring project. It's a wonder the thing never caught fire.
Here's the rats nest before:

It was great...the parts car had a 302 in it from a Crown Vic or something, and i sold that for $200 so i essentially got the nose for free. It took us a good hour to get it to my buddy's house which was maybe a fifteen minute drive. I had one of those little LED lights on my keychain and used that for headlights. Good thing was we were so far out in the boonies that we never had to deal with any other cars or cops or anything like that. I refused to pull it with anything because i didn't wanna risk screwing up the valance.

You got it man! I've got spring fever in the worst way. I got some new street tires for the back but i'm gonna hold off on mounting them until i can get it to the track at least one more time on what's left of the drag radials. Lately i've had the itch to get some Welds again.

Yeah i'd love to get another set but i'm not parting with my ARE's. I'm gonna have to do something for slicks...so maybe if i can score a set for a good price i'll do that, otherwise i'll probably be rockin 10 holes for the track.
I'm heading down this morning to meet up with mustangboy to get my intake and valve covers. They're gonna look killer
Now if Jesse would find me a damn oil fill cap so i can use them...

Got my valve covers and intake back from mustangboy today...they look killer. The pics don't do them justice...they look real grey in the pics but they have a slight sparkle to them just like blasted aluminum would. I still have to sand down the second valve cover but here's what they'll look like.

Looking through some old Shelby pics, they could've been a brighter gray but i'm cool with how they are. They'll look great in sun light. The valve covers were originally just a plain cast finish, but it sucked because you could see the casting ripples in the finish and they looked kinda crappy even brand new. I guess the old Shelby covers were cast differently because you don't see it in those.

Well, i had this idea for the longest time...i'm sure someone has thought of it or maybe done it but i haven't seen it, and i'm thrilled with the results so i have to share.
You need:
1) a brushed/machined finish breather lid
2) a bolt that just barely fits through the hole, along with 2 washers and a nut to thread onto the bolt
3) a drill press
4) various sandpapers, wire brushes, brillo pads etc for repairing the finish
5) a new decal (which i don't have yet)
Take the bolt and run it up through the bottom of the breather lid, with a washer on first. Then drop the other washer on and tighten the nut down on it TIGHT so it doesn't spin. Next chuck the bolt up into your drill press TIGHTLY. You don't want this thing whipping off like a frisby. At this point you're gonna want to set the drill press to the slowest speed and see how well you have it centered. Also it's common for the breather to be a little bent so you may have to tweak it so that it spins nice and evenly and doesn't wobble. You should end up with something like this (i've already started the process):
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee275/EVIL85SSP/Mustang%20Pics%20and%20Videos/0208102058a.jpg
Now, you don't need to go super fast with this....in fact it's probably very dangerous. I kept it around 45-50rpm. I started out with 80 grit sandpaper because my lid was very rough and had a lot of deep water stains. It had been glass bead blasted so all the original brushed surface was long gone. If you're just restoring/refinishing yours, you'll want to start with something much finer than 80 grit, but you probably don't want to go any lower than 100-150 or you're gonna start polishing it rather than putting the finish back into it. I found that after going over the whole thing with 80 grit so that all or most of the spots were gone, i went back over it with a stiff wire brush (preferably one that's not all bent and bristled up because that'll cause irregular brush marks) and worked my way around it with that, and then went to a heavy brillo pad that's used for prepping head surfaces. Then as a final touch i went over it with a softer bristle brush to really fine out the brush marks.
Here's what i started with...this is the surface after being glass bead blasted. It's not a good pic, but suffice to say it looks like a satin metallic silver paint job...it had a super fine grit finish to it. I liked it, but wanted it to look original.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee275/EVIL85SSP/Mustang%20Pics%20and%20Videos/P7160059.jpg
Here's what i ended up with:
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee275/EVIL85SSP/Mustang%20Pics%20and%20Videos/breatherlid-1.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee275/EVIL85SSP/Mustang%20Pics%20and%20Videos/breatherlid1.jpg
A couple drawbacks....1, your lid is now raw aluminum. You have a couple options here....either spend a fortune for aluminum sealer (Zoop is a good product for this but it's espensive), or try your hand at a spray clear coat, or have it powder coated clear like i plan to do. Another thing is, it shows every ding and imperfection in the metal, which mine clearly has plenty of, but hey it's 25 years old and has lived a rough life. Third, DO NOT TOUCH IT before you clear it or something, or the oil from your skin will stain the raw aluminum. I'm keeping mine in a plastic bag until i can get it powder coated. Once it's coated, i'll install the decal. The pictures make the blemishes look worse than they really are....once it's on the car it'll look fantastic, and like i said if you have a nice lid that just needs some of the brush marks "fixed", this is the ticket.
Hope this helps someone :D I've tried this will a hand held drill....don't. It hurts lol

Uhhhh no. Not that anxious to get it on. I'll wait till it melts and then i gotta put the new intake on and i'll probably throw the old carb on and drive it to Cincy and then throw the new one on and tune it before i drive on it. It's supposed to be no more than one or two jet sizes off at the most but usually dead on...but i like to play it safe. I'm not sure about the chrome either...it kinda throws off my anti-bling powdercoat but i didn't have any options on finish.

I dunno of there's any progress at all.....have to ask Plated. He's got his hands full airbrushing crotch rockets it seems ;)
New house is pretty sweet. It was a sight to see with 2 foxes sitting in the driveway when i dropped off Kenny's car. That SOB just won't hook to save its life. I only got to make one pass in it but i don't know if i could've done much better. It really needs slicks.

Hey guys...yeah it's taking longer than expected but as Chris mentioned it's not just a primer/spray job like the rest of the cars he's done this year, it has some rust spots that are being taken care of, needs a rear bumper and trunk lid, and the doors look like they were dragged through gravel and have about a thousand dings that need smoothed out not to mention a couple Maaco paint jobs and my primer job on top of it that all need to come off.
There's no need to bust the guys balls over it...good things come to those who wait...

Oh I do, I just remembered what we were talkin about when I was over there... just wondering if the plans changed on it as far as color?
I know good paint jobs take time... I could only IMAGINE how long it would take to do a "homemade patina" paint job! Some of those guys got a LOT of time and money in those rides...

Well Chris and i talked it over...he talked me into an olive green color which i wasn't real crazy about at first until i saw this Toyota color and i was hooked instantly. We're gonna do the window frames and the grill/headlights in satin black and we talked about maybe doing a 2 tone with black but i'm not sold on that just yet...i think this color with the black accents and my black rims could stand on its own..

In different light it looks more like a grey color...almost like how Ford's mineral gray looks like a champagne tinted grey..this color is like an olive tinted gray. Sometimes it's more of a gray color:

ill also add that a restoration rather than a paint job takes time.. I took my gt apart christmas of 2002 and didn't get it back from the shop until may 2007...and about 10k more than i planned on spending.. but I wouldnt trade it for the world.. I think my car looks awesome.. and I love that olive green color.

Yeah i agree..it's been primer for so long, i'm sure i'll be happy with anything glossy lol. The color is still a little up in the air but i think it's getting narrowed down. It's gonna stand out in a crowd that's for damn sure and it won't be mistaken for anyone else's car ;)
