My friend who is doing the 351 RX7 swap is considering going with a T56 instead of a T5, because it will bring the shifter back where it needs to be... But he and I do not know the difference in all the T56's available... so what is the difference in the Cobra, GM, and Viper T56's? Which one would be best for his application???

The GM cars use a 26 spline input, where the Fords use a 10. LT1 ratios are 2.66/1.78/1.30/1.00/.74/.50 and they use a 27 spline output where Fords are 31.

The 03 Cobra tranny is not quite Viper spec. It has the 10 spline input, with ratios 2.66/1.78/1.30/1.00/.80/.63

Not too sure on other exact specs.

But a GM trans can be used just as easy? with the addition of a 26 spline clutch disc...

No the input is shorter and they do not make a gm t56 into ford sb bell so the front cover needs changed as well

front cover as in the bearing retainer? So a bearing retainer and input shaft and it will work?

help please. I really wanna get a t-56 in this car, but the $1500.00 difference between the tranny's is hard to justify

Front cover, meaning the mid plate. T-56's have an extra plate on them in between the bellhousing itself and the main trans case. The main trans case is not sealed on the front like 5 speeds.

You can swap the midplate with a cobra or viper midplate and then use a quicktime bellhousing. You'll need to swap the input shaft and I believe the tailhousings are different as well, so shifter position is also different on the GM's.

You also need to see if it's a mechanicl or electronic speedo. That can be another issue as well.

If all he is wanting a T-56 for is shifter position, that's an awful lot of work for a VERY minimal difference. Keep in mind, viper and ford T-56's will come right up through the stock shifter location on a fox.

The lt1 box I have is a early model one that Rpm say I can swap those two out with cobra oe parts and it will work. BUT A: I have npt done it yet to verify and B: mine is a very early model box so it may be differant.

You will be fine, but you have to change the tailhousing also I believe for proper shifter location.
