Gould #15 project

I had recently picked up an older Gould car #15. A friend of mine had it forever and was on the cover of Muscle Mustang Fast Ford magazine March 2002. He took really good care of it and he traded it to another mutual friend for an 03 GT that used to be mine. Well to make a long story short he stripped the car and I bought the shell. It had alot of really good parts still left on it and i threw it together with a bunch of junk I had laying around. Here is some pictures of when I first bought it.

I finally got it rolling at my buddy's garage to get it home. Its got a set of Weld Draglites 15x10 rear and 3.5 front with 26x10.5 ET Streets.

Once I got it home a threw a stock bottom end together with an E-303 cam and ported stock E7 heads. I also bought a bunch of the original parts from the car as well like the Victor 5.0 upper and lower, 75 mm TB, 80 mm MAF, 42 lb injectors, and MSD distributor. The suspension consists of Competition Engineering struts and shocks with Eibach drag springs. It has a complete Aeromotive fuel system, tubular k-member, aluminum driveshaft, and a stock rear with 3.73 gear.

As soon as I got it together I took it to the local car show and got a trophy. Must say something about the paint which still looks beautiful! I drove it around for a while like that but it just wasnt as fast as it should be, so the other day I got with Mike Bell and bought his 347 out of the vert. I bought the 28 oz flywheel from Rich (thanks!) and went to Jegs and bought some new Comp Ultra Gold 1.6 rocker arms. I sat the motor in last night and Im working on getting things buttoned up today. Hopefully have it running tonight.

No I didnt get to that fast enough. I wish I could've! Im still looking at the On3 Performance turbo kit so the motor will still be boosted.

Thanks everyone! I got pretty much everything buttoned up today and Im so close to hearing it run. I still have to adjust the valves and set the timing. I bought the March alternator bracket at Jegs only to find out Ill have to get a new shorter belt.
Also on a crappy note... I was in the garage with the door closed when the wife started yelling for me. She said there was something smoking in the basement so I hurried and raised the door and ran inside to find my sump pump had took a shit! I got that squared away and went back out to the garage and if you`ve seen my garage you know what Im about to say! With the hood open and me opening the garage door it smacked the hood and put 1 huge scratch about a foot long in the hood. My day has turned to crap! I need a bigger garage and now I also need the hood painted again! Ill post pictures of it tomorrow!

I think it was just a way for me to get a different hood! Im wanting the H.O. Fibertrends extended cowl hood so its in the future now for sure! I`ll have it done in the next day or so. I mounted up the fan and overflow today but didnt have time to post up more pics.

Well if your up for it you may be getting the hood to fix and paint. Its not real bad just an eye sore . Also Im looking for a Cobra rear bumper cover to get rid of the GT40 bumper thats on it and it has a few different colors on it as well

Yes it was man. So much so that I just didn't want to have that much power under the hood anymore. Next time I am pushing that much power, it will be in a hardtop of some kind with a cage. I'm sorry you didn't get it too, would have been cool to just leave it on the engine for ya. I'll take you up on that when I come home. Thanks man!

Ok its running!!!! I still have the same surging idle problem as I did before but its is running. I think I need to adjust my fuel pressure down since I have the 42 lb injectors it seems to be a little rich. I currently have it at 43 psi and Im going to bring it down to around 38 or 40. Timing is at 12 degrees and it just doesnt want to idle. Its starting to piss me off. Motor runs great but I have a slight miss along with a little vibration around 2800 rpm's. I think I may have a rocker to tight causing the dead cylinder or it could be a fouled plug. Ill check it out tomorrow and hopefully have it running good.

what air meter you running? if it's a c&l swap it out i bet thats you surging problem,i've seen a few mustangs over the yrs with c@l meters have crappy idle issues,are clocking the meter to? food for thought.that motor from mike should thump:bigthumb

Ok I got the new flywheel today from Dayton Performance which was originally installed on the motor and I did manage to get the old one out. Here is a picture of the 2 side by side. The one with the weight on it was bought used and is the one that caused the vibration. The original flywheel from DP is the one without the weight

Yep he still has it. he`s living out in Oklahoma and I talked to him a wile back and he said its just sitting in the garage. I think he said he hasnt drove the car in years. You can stop by anytime. Once I get it going it should be a runner!

Alright I made some progress today!!! I got the new flywheel in and put most of it back together. The tranny is back in and all bolted up now and filled with fluid. I do however still have to put on the new X-pipe i bought off of 93LXhatch and bolt the exhaust back together. So here is the good part!!! I started it up and it fired right over and guess what? My vibration is gone. Completely smooth throughout the entire RPM range.. Finally and Im so happy!!! It does still have a few bugs that need worked out and then I'm going to get with Matt at Dayton Performance for a good tuning! Hopefully in the next week or two it will be completed. Im looking forward to tomorrow to finish it up and actually take it down the street to see how it does. Ill update then. Thanks Mike!!

Well I finally got to drive it. Put maybe 2 miles on it now. I still have some bugs to work out but its getting there. I have an oil leak issue with the passenger side valve cover and it looks like its leaking out of the dipstick as well. I'll get them eventually, but for now I'm done. I love the way the X-pipe sounds though!

After coming home from driving it I did notice I had some condensation in the oil fill. Can anyone tell me if this is normal or not? Seems to run great and pulls pretty good. Still needs tuned and possibley new plugs and wires. Heres a picture of the oil fill and it sitting outside!

Yeah I havent seen it before on any of my other motors either. Maybe it has to do with Global Warming! I dont know. Maybe its just got alot to do with all the snow we`ve had and the moisture in the air. Thanks!

Thats kind of what we are thinkin. Im sure its nothing. The motor runs great and feels real good even though its running a little rich.

Brian, matt will get on it asap and run every test we discussed, just to make sure I don't need to do anything to it. We need to get a hose on that nipple off of the filler tube and eventually get another breather somewhere since you don't have a PCV in that intake. Every engine makes a little crankcase pressure, and it also sucks in outside air through that nipple. That's where a nice catch can would come in handy. look at my r/s car's setup next time you're up there.
I am very curious to see what hp it will put out all motor with that blower cam and lower compression. It made an easy 600 with the blower, so I'm excited to see what it will make.

Yeah Mike I looked at your R/S car while I was there today and Matt showed me how you had yours ran into a vented catch can. I like that set up. Matt said he is going to tee in a pcv valve in the vacuum line. I am anxious thats for sure!! It seems as I'm not having much luck with anything lately since the hood ordeal and then I bent a dipstick so I bought a new one and the dipstick is hitting the main girdle apparently. It goes in till about the last inch and just stops. Then loading it on the trailer this morning I scratched the front bumper cover up a little bit. I guess thats my magic brown finger!! Everything I touch is turning to shit! But my hopes are high and I'm still breathing somewhat fresh air so life is good! I also looked at the D1SC that is sitting there... I am thinkin hard on that but the wife isnt to happy with me spending so much on the car when I need a new garage built and she is wanting a concrete patio poured outback so it might have to wait. Yes when bundy moved to oklahoma i tried to get him to have the car transported out there and he was scared to.so my wife took a week of vacation and we trailered it out for him.we have flown him home a few times to visit since he has been out there.and are planning on visiting him again out there in june.the car just sits.

Ok I just got it back home! I drove it down the road and the car feels great. Its a completely different car it seems. Idles by itself and makes good power. Maybe Ill drive it around town some today just to put some miles on it. As far as the Dyno numbers go it made 341 hp and 381 lbs/ft. Pretty impressive for a low compression 347 with a blower cam I think. I may swap out cams for this year and put in a TFS stage 2 till the supercharger makes its way on. not bad i guess.im ready 2 spilt it jeff at percision last year got the cobra 455 hp on 150 shot it went 11.11 at 108 7.0 in the 8th at 100.15 it leaned out melted 3 plugs 2 valves. its ready 2 go if i was smart on computers i would post some pic. of the sled hopin 4 mid 10s stock with 200 shot wet kit.

Im not sure when ill get it to the track. i still got some things i want to do with it before it goes. I have the March alternator bracket to put on, i got some black interior to put in and Im wanting some Kirkey seats still. Also my radiator has a leak so I need to get the one from Mike or fix mine. I havent really looked at it yet. Ill get it there someday. Not in a real big hurry with it. More of a daily driver type just to tear up the streets.

It really depends on your goals for the Mustang. A roots style blower has great low end torque, while the turbo and centrifical blower are good up top. I've had the low end, but I love the upper end power.

Yeah I talked to her a while back and she said you was on here. I didnt know who you was then. Ill have to meet you sometime. Im looking for more top end power like the centrifical or the turbo. I like the price of the On3 kits and I have already talked to Chad there and he gave me a good price on it and I was going to do the Master Power T76. If Mike finds another Procharger set up for a good price (like the last one) and I have my garage done by then thats probably what Ill go with. I love the sound of both though. Getting ready to pull the radiator out and find my leak. Also going to install the March alternator bracket and new belt. I may try to take it to the track Thursday to see how it does. Ill post up some more pictures later.

Picked up a new camshaft today. Still debating what to do with it. Throw the new cam in to get me around 400 hp N/A or keep this one in and see how it does then add the boost??? I think I'll just hold up on it and see where I go with it!

Yeah Im pretty happy with it N/A. Ive drove it around here and its a blast. Im anxious to put a blower on it but Im still undecided on which one to go with. I know it will be a completely different car then! Ive talked to a few people about the F1R so we`ll see!! If so it will be coming back to you guys Mike!

Well you'll be the go to guy when the time comes so get ready!!! I know it will push the block to the limits so that may be something to do next year as well. A 8.2 inch Dart block combo!

Exactly and that was exactly why I sold off everything because I could see me getting a dart block, then a more radical custom of mine, then pumping up the boost, then porting the heads, and where would it end for my 'crusier'? lol. But yeah, those internals are screaming for a solid block. We'll get you there.

Well not sure what cam you bought but if it's the stage 2 I would either return it or sell it off. That's what I am running right now with my 347 and my car peaks around 5700. I am running AFR 185's out of the box that I bought from Mike last year. I am running a Victor 50 intake and that stage 2 cam just doesn't have enough duration on the intake side. Mike and Matt told me this when I told them what I was putting together but I was in a pinch at the time and just kept the stage 2 out of my old motor. I have been shifting at 5800 and running 11.40's@118 with 1.47-1.49 60's. Now last week I couldn't hit 4th gear to save my life and I was running 11.50-11.70's@116. Just my .02 on the stage 2 cam. I would either keep what you have and go with the supercharger or turbo. Or I would go with a stage 3 or a custom grind.

Yeah I had picked up the TFS Stage 2 cam but after tossin it around in my head I decided to go ahead and post it for sale on here and Im ready to add the boost! Your car is just bad ass Steve. I finally got to make a couple passes tonight at Kil-Kare and was pretty happy. I ran deadly consistent and went a 12.0625@112.08 and a 12.0645@111.50. Not bad for the first time out and only about 25 street miles on it. It has more in it but the rear end seems to be making some noise so I decided to load it up for the night and bring it home. You should see 11.8's with that easily, not too shabby for an engine built for boost running n/a. All around a sweet car.

Yeah I was pretty happy with it. Never once skipped a beat but I was having some battery issues and the noise in the rear. Ill check it out tomorrow and see what it is. Seems like a thumping noise in the rear end as its decelerating. sounds good under throttle but when you let off it makes the noise. Maybe the pinion is loose... I was hopin for the 11 second times slip!! Ill get it next time. Thanks Mike and all you guys/gals. I did see Donna yesterday there too and talked to her for a minute. Great group!

Yeah it was funny I seen Doughman there and he didnt have his car there??? It was running good but my battery died 2 times on me. I got a battery coming and I need to check the rear end out since I have some noise coming from it. But overall it was a good time and Im happy with it. 12.0s and no boost and atleast 3100lbs. No for some weight loss and some good weather later in the day and its gone high 11's easy. Ill let you know when I go back.

OK Ive been doing some thinking and talking with a few people and a buddy of mine made me a deal I couldnt turn down so Raz is now the new owner of my Gould #15. Well he is the one I bought it from so he just got it back with the new DP 347. Hope he is as happy with it as I was. In exchange for the car I ended up with Denny Reed's nasty ass 1270 hp Vortech blown 427 windsor turbo 400 combo. Now I'll be back on the prowl for a chasis that will handle this ungodly amount of power!!! Here is a picture of my new score!

Ive never been a fan of the carb but this set up is nice. Im still on the fence with it. Also I think I'd rather have a glide as well so... If I was to go Fuel injected what would your choice be?

I am not the one to ask on that, lol. I stick with mass air and stock electronics. I hear that bs3 is the one to go with, but I know very little about other than the ones I have installed. Also, there is no one that will give you any training on how to tune with it, or what all the parameters mean/do. I just didn't have the patience or the time to sit down and relearn how to tune, but I believe in hind site that it would be worth it.

Everything is good with this setup and he drove the car on the street with no problems. I wish he would have made some full throttle passes and saw the real potential of it though. That may be something for the future once I get it in and see how things turn out. I feel like throwing up right now and cant even sleep!!!

What negative talk have you been hearing? The Turbo 400 is a very good trans with a ton of strength. Nothing wrong with a 'glide setup or wanting to swap to one but you may be trying to fix something that isn't broke? :dunno:
