My 67 stang has a reman carburetor installed by the last guy that owned it. I drove it home from Tennessee with no problems, but since then I start it up and it idles very high, then when the engine heats up it starts to die out (especially in city driving). I noticed the engine heats up a little too much as well, but I think a fan shroud should take care of that. It is also leaking gas somewhere around the carburetor. I really don't know much about carburetors so any help or feedback would be appreciated. I am trying to get this car running right so I can get down to my in-law's garage.

Does it have an electric choke?

If so, try unplugging the wire going to it and open the throttle blade and zip tie the arm to something so it stays open, then try driving it and see if it changes.

I'm pretty sure its a manual choke. Its a stock autolite 2bbl.

Well, if you have a manual choke cable/knob in the interior somewhere then it's manual. Do you adjust that to fully open once it's warmed up?

Ok, thats gotta be what the knob is next to the e-brake! Do you pull that knob when the engine is warm? The car seems to be drowning in gas when it is warm so that must be it! I really sound stupid, but I have never messed with a carburetor a day in my life!

Nevermind, thats an air vent!

Well since you're unsure, look at the carb and see if there's a cable coming off of it...probably on the passenger side (not the throttle cable, it'll be a thin one that looks a bit like a bicycle brake cable). If you see that, then it's a manual choke. You might not have a cable at all, and the choke plate might just be in one position that works fine when it's cold but doesn't allow proper flow when it warms up. IF that's the case then open it up and zip tie it. It'll be a little rough starting when it's cold but it'll drive once it's warmed up. Then you can get a choke cable later.

I did a random search and i'm seeing a lot of these Autolite 2bbl's as having an electric choke. If you look at it and it has a round black plastic thing on the passenger side, then that's your electric choke. If that's not there then you'll have a setup that's like a throttle linkage on the passenger side that operates the choke plate via a rod that passes through the round part of the carb where your breather sits and up into the choke area.

Ok, it does have an electric choke. It looks like there are two hoses coming from the carb that lead to where the gas is leaking. So there is no gas on or around the carburetor. I just tried to start it earlier and it would barely run, which is what it normally does when it gets hot. Now I'm really confused!

check the timming, also lean can make the car run hot, id say remove the air cleaner and restrict the air with your hand if the engine smothes out u have a vacume leak.

We fixed the vacuum advance leak several weeks ago so I don't think its that. She's going to the shop friday. Keeping my fingers crossed that this car doesn't need any major repair!

Is the line that is leaking a vacuum line? Are you sure it isn't a fuel line?

Just askin'!

Just heard back from my mechanic, he said the fuel pump was leaking and the bottom radiator hose was leaking as well. Both fixed, he gave it an oil change and tuned the carburetor! He's gonna keep it for a couple days and drive it to see if its fixed. So far I'm only out a few hundred dollars! Not bad!
