View Full Version : Possible timing cover install problem

I started to install the timing cover on my car today. I have a book that I'm using for everything and I used a small bead of black silicon all around the timing cover and placed the gasket over that. I let it sit for about 15 minutes, then installed it against the block. I put the balancer on and centered the cover over the balancer and used a couple long bolts on the outside to hold it in place while I added other bolts.
That's what I found out that the ARP timing cover bolt kit doesn't have any of the right sized bolts. Actually, I was able to use about 2 of them. I then ran up to the hardware store and picked up a few more bolts as quickly as I could.
I only ended up getting about 5 bolts that were the proper length and I put those around the corners of the timing cover the best I could and tightened those down.
Do you guys think this will be ok to leave as is? I need to measure the bolt sizes and pick up about 5 more bolts and install them then torque all of them to spec. I'm just worried that since I didn't have all the bolts that the silicon is not going to seat properly.

I would take it back apart and get the right bolts and a new gasket. Try to get the locator dowels to. Ford sells them but they are 6 bucks a piece! Put silicone on both sides of the gasket but only around the water holes. Easier to do it now than later!

Yea, I think you're right. I was just thinking that, would suck to put everything back together and have it leak... WAY easier to do now while it's down this far and on a stand. Stupid ARP bolt kits....

I ran into the same problem with the ARP bolt kit. If you look at ARP's catalog, the part number Jegs and Summit sells as a generic bolt kit is only for '67-74 289/302 with a pass. side inlet pump. Kinda misleading the way they sell it. However, ARP is not responsible for resellers clarity, and they have taken great care of me time and time again.

Keep in mind that you might need studs insted of bolts for accesories to. Since you are doing this from scratch it might be a good idea to mock everything up before you put it all together.

Yep, I remember using a few studs back with the old 306. I figure though, I can use standard bolts for right now to get the cover tightened down and the silicon and gasket seated properly, then go back and add studs one by one where I need them. I've also heard that if you use the March alt bracket and power steering bracket, that standard bolts will work fine?

Yea, everything else has been ok so far with the other ARP bolt kits I bought. Only ones I haven't installed yet is the oil pan bolts. I'm sure those will be fine though.

The March alternator bracket comes with it's own hardware. It replaces 3 of the H2O pump bolts.

Ahh, perfect. I've actually been researching trying to find pictures so that I could see which bolts were replaced if any at all. I believe the power steering march bracket also replaces some?
