In years past, there has been a reputation at Thornhill of drinking and racing. Everyone seems to have a story about how this racer or that made a pass with a beer between their legs or something similar.

In the last two years, we've had no incidents and the drinking hasn't really been a big problem. However, we've still been plagued with the reputation. We know it's happened, and it's been frowned on, but nothing has been done to eliminate it. To get rid of that reputation, we've got to do it better than everyone else.

So, with each tech card, each driver will get an event type armband. Each employee, the guy running the lanes, the burnout box, and the starter, will be watching to be sure the driver is wearing the armband. Further, security and other employees will be instructed to be watching for racers, identified by these armbands, who are also drinking. If he sees it, he'll be taking the armband.

I realize that this isn't a fool proof system. Racers will be able to hide and sneak a beer without being seen. Security can't be everywhere, and racers could put the beer away when security is around. While not being foolproof, it'll go a long way to set the tone for a safer, better racetrack.

Also, where security has always been instructed just to keep violations low profile (such as smoking pot), but now the instruction has been issued to remove them from the track.
