So I go into work today. (big box retail) I come in about 10 min early and before I can get to the time clock I already hear I'm the 1st one in flooring for the day.
I'm thinking great my opener called in. Sure enuf he did.
So I'm doing my best to. Make people happy and answer all their questions and answer the phone and Walkitalkie.
I get a call from my manager, and she informs me that my only other coverage the closer called in also.
Now I'm like F-N great. This really puts a damper on the day.
I start to think and I come up with an idea, I'm supposed to open on Friday. 5am to 2PM.
So I call my manager back and Tell her I have an idea. I tell. Her that ill work till close if I can have tomorrow off. She thinks about it for a few min and agrees to it.

So I worked from 10am to 12:05 am. 14 damn hours. I fielded about 100 phone calls and sold 15k worth of flooring and 4.2k worth of blinds. I ran my ass off.

Now the part that really pisses me off is that for 1 no one will thank me for staying and helping out. 2 the 2 that called in will not get in trouble at all. An 3 this will probially happen again.
I can't help but care for my company image even though they shit on their workers all the time.

So to sum it up I hate my coworkers and my self for caring too much. I hate to make people wait. I've been selling flooring and blinds for most 11years.
I just try to do the right thing. Sometimes you win sometimes you loose.

Thanks for listening to my rant.

Sorry Stacy ill get you those answers later this morning.

Man do i know how you feel. You work your ass off for an employer who doesn't give a shit about you, doesn't realize the commitment you put in, and doesn't do shit to make others step up to the plate like you do. I'm sick of it myself.

Sounds familiar! Seems that is how all the companys act anymore. Ungrateful and expect the world without giving in return. Whats the world coming too?

OP, companies that let employees do that type of shit typically dont recognize individuals that take up the slack.

+1. Same thing with the people whose asses you covered. Maybe that is why I never get anywhere in a big company. When my shift is over, it's over, relief or not.

Look at it this way...you now have Friday off, and you were able to garner 6 hours of OT (if it's paid past 8th hour and not 40th hour that is).
Not always, but most often, you find this type of attitude in a company that it publicly traded, where EVERYTHING is about putting a tenth of a penny to the share. You'll find most privately held companies are usually more employee friendly.

I did con a friday off for it. I am also off Sat so i neglected to bring this up when i was working my deal.

Face, Let me know what sizes you need and what type. Mini blinds, Faux wood or real, cell or what ever, also a color if you know. Thanks

It's not so much the companies but the management running your particular store.

I have been through 5 different store managers, 15-20 assistant managers and i'm going on my 9th dept head.

I know the store managers control it alot by their actions and what their agenda is. I'm just tired of the same attitude.

Update, i get a call about an hour ago wanting to know if i wanted to come in today for 4-5 hours of ot? Aparently the same two called in today also.
I told him that normally i would, but after yesterday no thank you.

I get taxed to hell and back when i start getting that many hours and more so it it not worth it. He said he understood.

I used to work for another retailer, and the same attitude and work ethic i have now got me 3 promotions within the first 2 years of working there. Where i am now, it only seems to get me grief and called a trouble maker. I just don't understand.

Why I'm self employed right now. I have high standards of shipping and packing. When Sysco decided to increase the cube sizes of packed pallets to the point items on the bottom were getting crushed, I started caring less. I'm the type that would eat at the restaurants whose orders I pulled. When they started complaining to me about their items being smashed, I explained what was going on and to call their salesman. When Sysco basically said "oh well" and damaged returns went through the roof, I really stopped caring. They only cared about cases per hour, aka quantity over quality.

I had warned them of the dangers of doing this with the taller skids. Nothing like pulling up to eat somewhere and see a life squad there attending to the driver who got buried when a pallet tipped over even after being wrapped excessively.

Nothing like going up to the safety director and telling them....."I told you this would happen."

I've told them several time that i'm gonna make a shirt that says "I TOLD YOU SO" and that's gonna be my uniform just so i don't have to say it every day.

What really pisses me off more than anything is i'll try my best to explain to these knuckle draggers what the problem is...they just nod and go "uh huuuuh". Then a month later we have a meeting and they say "yeah we had a meeting of the minds and we found the problem to be ______" and proceed to tell me that they've figured out what i've been telling them for a year and a half. The kicker is they still don't do shit to fix the problem so what's the point?

And yeah, it's quantity over quality BIG TIME. When i was in school i had a teacher...good man (RIP) who taught me about the balance between quality and quantity but it seems like every job i have they try to burn the candle at both ends and don't give a damn how it effects their business or employees.

I've been with my company for 3 years now. Myself and another guy that started 2 months after me in the same position just another shift. I become team lead for my shift after only being there a year. The other guy gets a service position that came open and works in that for 6 months. My position requires me to know every ones job in the plant and that is how I got team lead by learning every ones job when my job wasn't busy. The other guy just does plant service doesn't learn anyone other job but service and the paint job that both of us did before. Well fast forward 3 months and a foreman job comes open I go out for it the other guy doesn't by this time I know every job in the plant. They can't get anyone to come in off the street and apply so I have the job in the bag. Next thing I know the other guy is my boss knows nothing about any of the other jobs and is always coming to me for my opinion. Well fast forward to this year. Still a team lead on my shift. Another guy gets hired less than a year ago to run one of our presses, economy take a dump and we have to shut that press down. Now our buisiness starts recovering after the first of the year and we have a meeting and my team is told that said guy is now our assistant manager. So I get pissed and go to HR and ask why I was looked over for a position that was created to keep this guy around. They have me and my boss and his boss have a meeting and they pretty much tell me well your second shift and the other guy is first shift and we don't see all that goes on, on your shift and we feel that said guy is the best fit for this job. Well said guy is in the same boat as the other guy was with me knowing the in and out of all jobs in the plant and he knows none except the press he operated. So he starts coming to me asking me about processes and other stuff well I have had enough and I tell him to go ask our manager when ever he has a question. Our manager comes out and asks what my problem is so I begin to tell him again. He tells me again that I was over looked and that he knows I work my ass of and that I know more than other said guy trying to give me a pep talk. I told him to stop blowing smoke up my ass and if the other guy has a question about something that he needs to answer it because I wasn't the person for the job. Sorry for the long rant but this is why I want to start my own buisness and get out from underneath the corporate hand.

I made a LARGE graph on a slip sheet, as quantity goes up, quality goes down. There was a huge corporate meeting and I "arranged" to have this sign hoisted into place to were only one person could remove it, and he was on vacation. I was asked about it and simply told them, if they look closely, it was signed by the creator.

I was labeled a disgruntle employee, yet had the best ratio of no mispicks, like over a year at 5,000+ cases a week, something I was proud of byt ended up making a slight error which ended my streak and was passed my a Mexican who worked just as hard as me, Ecgardo, looks the like the Russian cook from Red October.

Put simply, I got fired for fucking caring. No, I'm not a perfectionist but do the best I can. When any new customer came on board, like The Golden Lamb, I was the one chosen to pick their cooler product. I hated seeing damaged product coming back because it was smashed and the customer rejected it. The trucks with the higher stack skids had 4 empty floor spots instead of the normal two. I figured it up that $40 labor was saved per TRUCK but was averaging $100-$200 in damage per truck.

Yeah, they hated someone good with numbers was just a warehouse grunt doing his job and making the college educated folks look stupid.

I have one thing that you'll never take from me, PRIDE in my job that it WILL be the best I can do, safely. By telling people to do a shitty job just to get the job done, worker moral goes to hell and it all falls apart.

We would have 40 packers on a Thursday night to select 42k-46k cases. They now average 22k-23k on a busy night.

I told you so.

Sorry for the rant, but there are many workers like me that just want to do the best job they can. Something our parents and grandparents taught us.

Pride in a job well done, no matter the job or task.

One thing to add, my son has they same work ethic. Started out pushing carts at Kroger's, at age 20 he became an asst. manager in produce. His store (Madeira) has some of the lowest "wasted" product due to it going bad.

Last time we talked, they are wanting to move him to the newly reopened store at Harper's Point. He made more last year as an asst. manager for only part of a year than I did in my best year, little shit grossed 45k and then got a bonus for the low wasted product.

OK, off my soap box....for now.
