I picked up my moms 98GT after it sat for about six weeks. It started and sounded ok, after a few minutes it started to mis and then it quit. Would not restart sounded like it was out of time. Took off the valve cover and found 3 rockers came out from under the cam. I put them back on and turned it over and they came right back off . Any ideas ??????
The only out of the ordinary it was about 3 quarts low on oil.

May be bent valves or weak/broken springs. Could also be a dropped valve seat from overheat (low on oil). Lifter may not being coming all the way back up. Kind hard to say. Why was it parked and sitting for 6 weeks? Just curious.

just put them back. These motors if left sitting for long periods of time, the hydralic lifters collapse and until they pump back up they will slide and displace quite easily. My suggestions to you is to take off the valve covers and get the cam changing kit so you can remove the cams w/o loosing your place on the timing chain. take the cam caps off and remove the cams and take out the lifters and compress them and soad them in oil. Then just reinstall everything.
Don't worry this is a common problem with these motors and an easy fix.

you can get them from Jegs and summitt. I think just about any where. they hold the cam gear and chain in place so you don't get it out of time. The other option is to unhook the fuel harness in the rear of the car and turn the engine over. This will get the oil back up to the top of the heads so that that lifters pump back up.

If you're just replacing the lash adjusters I wouldn't worry about pulling the cams out. Just pop all the followers out and use a magnet to pull the lash adjusters out.

It's just hard to get the front rockers out if the cam is still in there. Thats all.

make sure you put 5w20 oil in it to ive heard from some of my techs at the ford dealer i work at that heavier oil will knock them loose too. May sound stupid but ive heard of crazier things.
+1 on it being a lifter. i got the cam kit at o'reilys for about 130 with tax. hope it all works out.
