What im working with ...

331 Stroker
Trick Flow Twisted Wedge 170cc Heads
Victor 5.0 efi Intake
.512 / .224 ~.230 dur / 112* schneider cam
1.6 rockers

Plan is to take my granny shifted 11.38 into the 10's ... a well street mannered 10 1/4 to 10 1/2:1 compression engine in a full weight coupe ...

Plan is to change NOTHING ... keep the same parts and go faster ... no weight reductions, no juice, no compression bump, no cam change ... port work on everything, done by me ...

Nothing like taking a few thousand dollars worth of parts and start hacking on them

331TwistedWedge
07-11-2010, 01:15 AM
110+ hours later, my heads are done ...

the heads stock were a 170cc runner, took that to a 184cc ...

sent the heads to Total Engine Airflow for a valve job and milled for clean up ...

flow numbers were ...

Lift/Intake/Exhaust

.100 71 / 56
.200 141 / 108
.300 208 / 146
.400 262 / 180
.500 292 / 205
.550 301 / 216
.600 308 / 225

dont let anybody tell you home ported heads wont flow ...

331TwistedWedge
07-11-2010, 01:22 AM
Victor 5.0 EFI Intake ...

the victor can use a ton of help in the upper plenum ...

that middle section is equivalent to 65mm, after hours of porting i have rough cut it out to about an 80mm ...

doesnt look like much of a change in the pics, but its a huge difference in person ...

man i am really burnt out ... i still have to finish the upper and port match the lower ...

Pretty cool, nothing wrong with doing things on the cheap.

its saving me a ton ... i was quoted about $1800 for port work on the heads and lower intake ... probably another $200-$300 to fix that upper ...

I put the grinder down for a while and decided to paint my block ... primed and painted using dupont cast iron ... gives it a natural clean look ...

before and after ...

you can see the trick flow valve reliefs in the pistons, pretty much shows you im running no cam

everything is going into this (for those of you that dont know me) ... 25k original miles and around 2300 on the 7 year old stroker ... i plan on driving this car a lot more ... im tired of it being a garage queen ... the ac may go back on as well ...

i was just thinking, my damn maxima went a 14.56 out of the box ... pretty sad ... anyway, im going to start enjoying this car once again ...

In '98 a friend of mine bought a cherry 82 gt with welds on it. New paint, new welds, immaculate interior and 100% stock drivetrain. We were at a stoplight on beechmont when a new Dodge Intrepid pulled up. The 10yr old kid in the pass. seat was in love with the 82. He pointed the car out to his dad, and when the light turned green..... The intrepid fuggin roasted us

i use to get thumped by those new camaros back in the day ... those mid 90's that came out running 14's ... i had every bolt on under the sun with that auto and couldnt beat shit ... it made me mad as hell

updating the thread a bit ...

i took the tremec tko out and sent it away last saturday, place is called meyers tranny & gears ... my meyer force tranny should help gain 2-3 tenths by powershifting ... should be a big help ...

TEA called, heads will be back next week ... they changed the valve job and heads flow 320/225 at .600" ... i have to give Total Engine Airflow a LOT of credit, heads flowed just under 300 cfms when they left my house ... their valve jobs flat out work :bigthumb

end of august or early september ... gonna get a few things powder coated, kennys work adds like 10-15 hp ... gotta make it purdy ...

i have a k-member and a-arms that i've had since 2007 - time to put them on ... but yea, hopefully soon ... the leg work is pretty much over, time to assemble ...

i dont think its gonna be a low or even a mid 10 second machine ... the ac is probably going back on and my suspension isnt a good 1/4 mile set up ... trying like hell to make it street friendly ... whatever it does at the track, i guess i will have to live with it ... thats the reason for keeping the cam, its smooth on the street ... low compression and a small cam, i know im leaving hp on the table - but you have to draw the line somewhere ...

my goal is a 10.999 :bigthumb

still roughing in the upper intake ... up to 40 hours or so ... i have to blame my compressor for most of that, it cant keep up ... its far from finished, but you can see the middle is carved and the left 4 runners ... went from a 2.20" in height to a 2.35" ... tapered it down to the stock size opening ... cleaned up a ton of bad casting flaws ... pic 2 shows how bad the runners looked from the factory ...

hopefully sand rolled and polished by wed/thursday ...

331TwistedWedge
07-25-2010, 06:58 PM
got the thin neck opened up, 40-80-flap wheel and polished ...

have the runners carved with the hogger ... time to shape them with some sand rolling ... moving right along ...

Tea has a very happy flow bench. Your heads flow the same as my tfs r heads that are fully ported. Lol. Except mine flow 270 on the exhaust. Your upper looks good but u can take those bolt hole bungs out that are in the intake path and put copper tubes that are thin walled and gain a bit. I've ported my victor efi 3 times. Just make sure the edges on the intake right before it goes down the runner are not knife edged. They should be rounded and not sharp. I had about 40hrs on mine the first pass and had the same compressor issues. I went to a 1/2 harbor freight drill so I could get more done with less vibration. Your combo looks food with the exception of the cam. It's most likely not going to get u up in the 6800-7000 rpm range the Vic efi wants. Good luck with the build sounds like a screamer. Kevin

331TwistedWedge
07-26-2010, 10:36 PM
i knife edged the upper ... did you test yours knife edge? ... i can always flatten them out ... pm me or post some info on that ...

i just knocked the bolt hole guides down, not going to knit pick a few cfm's ... but thats a great idea with the brass tubing ...

cam will be holding the rpms back a bit ... probably a 6500-6600 rpm motor ... you have to draw a line in the sand somewhere between a drag car and a true streetable car ... im leaving horsepower on the table and i know this ... should be a fun car and fun to drive ...

you wanna hear something funny about flow numbers ... i made more at pauls when they flowed them before the valve job, than at TEA ... i lost a bit at .200-.300, but gained a ton at .400 and up ... def worth the trade ... flow numbers are flow numbers, they are just a tool to get you in the right direction ... the same with dyno numbers ... my measily 358hp went that 11.38 in great air ... granny shifting ... prob an 11.0 car gassed all the way at only 358 hp ... dynos are just for tuning ...

07-26-2010, 10:54 PM

It will run 10s with the new stuff I assure u. No I didn't try it knife edged. I did alot of reading about porting the intake before I did it. I have no idea how to port I just hogged the sucker out to a 1262r gasket. Just round them off don't make them flat. Does that make sense? Porting my upper only was worth 17rwhp and doing the lower was 12rwhp. I dyno everything I do to make sure I dont go backwards. The 358rwhp number u were at is long gone. A Anderson n91 cam would be perfect when ur ready to swap. Do u plan on running a bigger throttle body? I wouldn't waste ur money on it. We tested it against a 75 and it made zero difference between it and the 90. How big are ur comb chambers? Should run really good.

PM'ed you back on the pan issues.

You keep mentioning leaving power on the table and a streetable, good mannered car. Just make it a point to the cam guy that you want those things and I'm sure they will factor that in. I just think you'll be leaving a ton on the table by reusing that cam after all this time and work you've put into maximizing the good parts that you have.

What is the car tuned on? Maybe spend some time in the low rpm/street driving to get it smoothed out. Dyno tuning is expensive and most of the time are done for maximum power at higher rpm.

Is there gonna be a showdown between you and Jack when you get back to the track?:)

MD will tune it again ... i like the cam i have now, throwing on 1.7s for a bit more lift ... its street friendly and pulled 6500 with ootb twisted wedge heads ... cant argue with a cam that pulls rpm ... i think you guys need to look beyond lift numbers and massive duration ...

whats that nmra class restricted to a .500" lift cam? ... these guys are running high 9s? ...

you got some killer gains porting that upper ... spinning as many rpms as you are, i think your entire induction system is crucial ...

75mm tb, ive read that anything more was a waste ... my chambers end up being around 184-185cc ... i got there in 3 increments ... started out at 175cc, then went to a 178cc - had them flowed at 178 and made 288 cfms / .550" at pauls ... then i went to 184-185cc's ... flowed them again, then valve job was done and flowed once more ... lol ... i did a lot of testing ... it was worth it, knowledge for life ... the valve job helped a ton up top, TEA knows these heads like no other ... i lost a bit down low, but the peak jumped nicely ...

the exhaust ports went from a 66cc to a 70cc ... i ported up to better fit the headers ... left around an 1/8" for reversion ...

i begged, borrowed and stole knowledge for 2 months, while porting these things ... i bugged mike at tea and shannon about 3 days a week ... called ron at foxlake regularly as well ... i bet all 3 are glad these heads are done :D

moving on to the lower intake ... it needs machined, the victor 5.0 fits like ass! ... .183" needs to come off the passenger and .214" on the driver side ... never seen an intake fit so poorly ... not sure how this engine ran what it did before ...

Don't you want a "rough" runner surface?

And what intake gaskets are you using? When did you take your measurements for the lower? My R lower had a huge gap between the intake rails and block rails, but with the 1262R gasekts and torqued down, everything pulled together very nicely.

hell no! ... not even on the lower ... its all air ... this isnt a carb setup fishlips ... lol ... you only want the heads to have some texture ... your injectors squirt at the tip of the lower intake and into the head ports ...

im running the 1262r's ... i got the measurements for ellisons now, taking .150" off the passenger and .140" off the driver side ... he has a formula for the end rails ... i think its 150% of the face milling ... a thick bead of silicone is your best friend for the front and back rails :bigthumb

im porting an intake for a friend right now, its a carb set up ... i will stop at an 80 grit for the intake runners, now those you CANT polish ... those carb intakes are very bumpy for fuel atomization ... its a wonder how those things even flow the way they do ...

331TwistedWedge
08-04-2010, 11:11 PM
my block was decked .020" and heads were cleaned up a little (milled), throw in that .090" 1262r gasket and thats why i need so much taken off ...

i think steveslx had .125" taken off both sides with a regular 1262 ... theres a .030" difference in thickness between the 2 gaskets ... so i guess my numbers arent too far-fetched ...

It seems like I read somewhere that when you jump up in rocker size, you actually drop peak rpm by 2-300 rpm's. I'm not sure, can't remember where I read it, but it may be worth dynoing both ways to compare. I would be curious to see the difference.

i will look into that ... i never heard of that one, but you could be right?? ... im trying to get rid of my 1" spacer cuz that hogs rpm as well ... just need to clearance my shifter cable away from the fuel rails ...

just updating this a bit ...

been working hard on this each night, prob 3 weeks away ...

shannon finished up my new liberty/meyers/tremec ... hopefully i can gas this thing ...

a slew of parts came in from astro, summit and ebay ...

notched my pistons yesterday, i now have a .110" deep eye brow above the inline relief on the intake side ... this should leave me future cam options if i need it ... degreed the cam, advanced it 4* ... the idea was to get my midrange to kick in quicker, so im not waiting for hp to build ... it worked last time, i just hope i dont lose peak running 1.7s ...

the lower intake is done (all porting is done) ... THANK GOD!!!

need to order 6.600" push rods and i can put this thing together ... k-member and a arms to go in next weekend ... man i wish i had a weeks vacation left, this would be done ... goal is to be on the dyno sept 17th and to run with you guys on the 18th ...

2nd pic shows the left 2 ports (ported) vs the stock ports ... fuel injection is very challenging to port up top ... those fuel inj bungs like to grab the hogger bit ...

TONS of work on this thing, i hope it runs ... im tired!!!!

QA1 k-members are JUNK!!!!!!

engine is 1/4" foward (after grinding on the k-member itself), steering linkage is now short, you have to fight the a arms on and you have to hack on your motor mount tabs/shorten the driver side bolt ...

its coming back off and im going back to stock, wasted sat night, sunday and monday on this thing ... engine could have been dropped by now and project about done :mad::mad:

I quit selling QA1s a few years ago. You get what you pay for. Call Jason at PA, he will get ya hooked up.:bigthumb

now thats a thought :bigthumb

i love how clean the engine bay is with a k-member, but what im going through is flat out nuts ... i dont mind fixing a thing or 2, but shit ............

im going crazy with this thing!!!! ... i was talking to myself, then i answered myself :tard:

Damn whoever did that coating on all those parts does killer work!! Get the PA k member and be done with it. Do it while its apart now cause you'll regret it later if you don't.

Ya..QA1's fit just as crappy as the old D&D's. PA or Team Z will be my next one when I need it.

got the engine dropped after hours of modifying that junk ass k-member (thanks shannon) ... got the new quick release quadrant in, firewall adjuster and cable (thanks shannon) ... a arms needed reamed for a few hours on each side for the stock bolt to fit, a arms are on of course (thanks shannon) ...

do you see a trend here ... thanks shannon :bigthumb

plan is to get a few little things done through the week, and button it up saturday ... hopefully im on the dyno friday the 24th ...

I like your build, but I think visually, it needs a little color. Too much aluminum and the PS pump......well.......

Best of luck, on getting it done and on the dyno. I look forward to seeing the numbers.

come on man, those stock ps pumps are sweet

i thought about black and a little red in there, but a clean cast look shouldnt go out of style ...

im looking forward to starting it up ... what i thought was going to be a simple build, turned into work ... im curious about the dyno/track results, because i have ALOT of people blasting the mild cam ... def be interesting ...

You know, once you get the distributor and wires and all the rest on there, it won't look bad.

But that pump..........well........

So did you keep the QA1 junk?

yes i did ... it took some persuasion, but it worked ... its actually off 1/8" on passenger side and 3/16" on driver (both forward) ... shannon made me 2 spacers to lengthen the steering linkage ...

i got lucky on the a-arms, they centered nicely and stayed tucked ... the a-arm install took the most time ... only 4 bolts, lol ...

a little something that i wanted to try......i knocked down all of the welds that hovered in the headers ... its amazing the size you gain when you open these up ...

1st pic is finished, 2nd pic stock ... looks MUCH better in person ... these are bbk long tubes, 1 5/8" ...

dyno appointment is set, that means i have to be done this weekend ...

331TwistedWedge
09-24-2010, 06:42 PM
so how much did you pick up?

59hp ... 300 more rpms, a better graph by far ... i will try to scan it on here, if not, i will take a pic ...

not bad for the same engine / cam / exhaust and thru the same tranny ... dyno'd both times at md ...

the sky is the limit on those trick flow heads ...

and ...... a lighter car, newer slicks, 2 step, rev limiter and shannon worked the tranny over ... should be interesting ...

just updating my thread since people wanted track numbers ...

having an electrical issue right now? ... i got 2 partial passes in before the car started acting up ....

1st pass was a 1.64 60', granny shifting, short shifting (5800-6000) coasted and slammed the brakes on ... didnt want to break into the cage zone ... i accidentally went an 11.39 at 107 ... 2nd pass about the same type of run, coasted in at 89mph (11.91)

hopefully im up and running by friday ...

RyanR

Nice runs! What was 1/8 mile?

97mph ... granny shifting, short shifting and 2nd gear was slipping as bad as 1st ... 98-99 should be do-able going all out ...

I'm assuing you have no bars?

Nice numbers Rick. Would like to see a full pass! :bigthumb

no cage ... i cant do it, 25k miles on the car ... as bad as i need and want 1, i just cant do it ...

im an idiot for not going all out ... then again, i didnt expect issues after a few runs ...

the car has been put through the ringer, havent found the issue yet ... leak down tests, compression tests, diagnostic tests, had the wideband on it and probed the piss out of mass wires ... borrowed a new computer and lightning meter, nothing ... pulled the chip and got a new chip, nothing
