Ok...

So it's been so long that I don't know what flexplate is in my car.
Also, I'm not sure what bell housing is in it, all I know is that the one that was given to me after my original was lost by a shop was not the correct one either.

So I have a presumably correct combination of flexplate + bell housing + tranny.

My problem is that the bendix on the confirmed good starter will extend but not rotate. If we bench test it, it works fine.

The motor can be moved by hand (wrench...crank pulley). The fly wheel turns when we turn the motor by hand.

I have NOT confirmed that it is not a ground problem...but the clues arnt there for a ground problem. The only hint is that my tach shoots up to a 1000rpm after I release the key from the start position. No other gauges move funny.

My theory is that the starter was not meant for my combination bell housing and flex plate and thus is binding up or somehow otherwise interfering in a configuration that prevents it from rotating.

What are everyone elses thoughts.

Also, thanks to Alan (DirtyDog) for taking my calls at 830pm!

I'd say the starters bad. Just because it will spin on a bench doesn't mean it will rotate your engine. Its a common problem on a mustang

Problem exists on old starter and refirb that Advanced swapped out for me a few hours later. Problem followed the starters.

Didn't you change the bell after the torque converter failed? I will call you today

I didn't think to mention but did you measure the converter to flexplate clearance? If you have the wrong flexplate it would be very tight and can cause pump/converter hub damage. You need no less than 1/8 inch no more than 1/4. I've run .100 before but I know for certain .060 isn't enough clearance when it gets hot it will break the pump.

Alan,
If I start this thing and the converter and pump gets fragged again, I'm going to melt the car down in to a block of steel than sink it in the ocean.

Is this something you can measure if I bring it to you?

And Thanks Kelly, you are correct, I did.

If you put a 164 bell house on the trans and have 157 tooth flywheel the starter will not make contact

Christ. I'm sure thats the issue.

Now I'm angry that my bell housing was fucking lost because this wouldn't be happening if I had the housing that I delivered the effen trans with.

I should have a flexplate to fix that in stock.

That unfortunately is the side effect of dealing with that person, don't feel bad I know about 5 people who are out more money than you because of him. Including myself.

Not to minimize other peoples problem....but words can not truly express the magnitude of broke that I am. You how people have a Net Worth? I have Net Debt.
That's why this is so fucking frustrating.

In all seriousness though, I do appreciate your level of participation and concern in the matter Alan.
