Just pull the timing chain cover off and fish it out with a magnet.

You might be able to get one of those long flexible magnets and fish it out through the distributor hole. Ive seen one guy do the same thing and he just left it in there and never had any problems with it.

I dont know but it only pisses me off because i just got the motor together and in the car a couple days ago. I just put the timing cover on and the thing that pisses me off the most is that it is a upper intake and a couple more simple things to be running and driving. Its just my luck that it falls directly into a 2" hole that important. I guess you learn by your mistakes. Shit happens.

Don't feel bad, I was helping a friend put his 351 Cleveland back together years ago. It looked georgious. Rolled that sucker over on the motor stand after puttingthe oil pan on, cam timing chain and cover, put the heads on, mounted the intake, started to put the distributor ... SON-OF-A#$%#$$!!!!!! Left the shaft for the oil pump laying on the floor before putting the oil pan on. Feel your pain.

how big of a bolt?

stick a fairly stong magnet on the bottom of the pan, and it should come to that. if the bolt is small enough you could get it out by draining the pan...

go to harbor freight get a strong magnet drag it along the bottem of oil pan and pull it toward the drain plug will it fit out the drain hole? or pull the cover or pan

It is a bolt that holds the fuel rails in. Its fairly small. I have a magnet and tried to fish it out. I couldnt get it from the top and i could get the magnet about half way down the block. I tried running the magnet along the oil pan as well. I am about to take some old oil and fill it up then drain it and hope that it at least pulls the bolt to the oil pan. I just am not starting the motor until i have a super very good feeling that it is in the oil pan. I am going to put oil in the motor and turn it over a couple times and feel for any hesitation. If there isnt any or i hear it drop to the oil pan I will be right back on track.

Use one of those tri angle welding magnets they are strong and may pull it along in the pan,

I tried turning the motor both directions buy hand (pry bar) and I cant really pri it too well counter clock wise and it locked up going clockwise. I am going to pull it up a little and pull the oil pan off and go from there.

The bolt was in the timing chain and after i pulled it off I had the motor on the engine lift and a bolt that was in the head broke and my motor fell about 2 and a half feet to my garage floor. My luck just keeps getting worse and worse.

I did something very similar. First I dropped a cap to a new injector down the intake. Then I dropped a nut down the same dist. hole. I still had the motor out so no big deal. But I learned one thing...3M tape is your friend when it comes to open holes on your motor.

Gotta be careful with engines hanging off cherry pickers. I always make sure to use Grade 8 bolts where I'm fastening the chain to the engine. I attach in 4 spots as well just in case....
