I think most stick welders are too hot for body work, panel replacement on a car. I've read this a few places because I too wanted to know. Think your best bet would be a TIG or MIG...not sure which is best?

just get a GAS not flux 110 mig and you will be happy. i think its the best way to learn . no need to tig any sheet metal on cars.

both style welders have their place in a garage. mig is perfect for body work, exaust, and so on. the major down fall with mig is outside work. wind blows the gas away from your work causing shitty welds. stick is mostly for heavy penatration, and outside ( wind ) does'nt cause problems like it would with a mig. I like them both. $50 bucks was well worth spent. A "gravy rod" to use with a stick welder is a 7014. 70 means 70,000 pull strength/ 1 means any welding position/ 4 means ac or dc either polarity, fast depsition rate, medium penetration, and easy slag removal.:bigthumb
