I have a buddy who said some guy wants to sell him a Boss 302 for $200 WITH a trany behind it. I told him Boss cranks go for more than that so i wanna look at this thing to see what it really is. The only way i know how to tell them apart is from the mains, aside from them having Cleveland style heads.

Look for screw in freeze plugs on the side of the block. If it's a real Boss 302 for $200, snatch it up quickly !!

I know right???? I'm just very very skeptical. I think the owner probably has no idea what he has, or just is trying to rip someone off. I would imagine even if it was blown up and needed a cylinder or two sleeved it would still be worth $200.

The easiest way is look at the valve covers. A 302 boss has 351 cleveland heads on it.

Casting number SHOULD be above the starter on the block.

If it has an intake, it should be aluminum, and should have a casting number of either C9ZZ-9424-C, C9Ze-9424-D or E, or D1ZZ-9424-A

Heads would have a casting number of C9ZE-A or C, D0ZE-A, or D1ZE-A. If they are C8VE heads they are less common.

Block should be a casting number of C8FE, C9ZE, D0ZE-B... Maybe even D1ZZ-B or C.
