I know alot of people have lost loved ones to this nasty ass disease. Well just last Wednesday I lost my best friend to it. He was diagnosed with it in April and they gave him 12-15 months to live. Well I would`ve been happy to keep him as long as possible but it wasnt meant to be. Now on top of that a couple weeks ago one of my puppies from the last litter started getting sick. We took him in and guess what??? Cancer! Well today he was put to sleep. 1 week away from my buddy passing so its only in good thoughts that my best friend needed a companion there with him. Im lost without the both of them... I know there is a shit load of money spent to find a cure but I wonder if its in the greatest interest of the doctors and such since it would pull so much funding from their pockets. Anyways sorry to be bitching and whining about it. I just needed to vent. Thanks everyone!

My Dad is battling small cell lung cancer, they gave him 18-24 months last year, he has gone through real aggressive chemo therapy & radiation, at best they can slow it down, they said if they cut him open that it would spread like wildfire. I'm glad your friend has mans best friend with him, sorry for your losses :(

I found out my dad had liver and colon cancer just a few months ago. Luckily he has a very good doctor and they are doing everything they possibly can for him. It is still a very tough time when you find out a loved one is terminally ill and it is all you can do to keep from losing your mind. Im sorry for your losses and this is something I wish no one ever had to experience.

Yeah its very sad to see these good people go through this shit. My friend had 2 chemo treatments and didnt leave his chair afterwards. I pray for everyone that ever has to go through it or deal with one of their family members who has it.

I lost my mom and dad to cancer a very long time ago. I am sorry to hear about your friend. Cancer is a horrible disease and I just don't understand why they can't figure out some sort of treatment for it besides shooting you with radiation or filling your veins full of poison. Sounds like the middle ages, next it will be leaches.

Yeah it was nasty as hell watching him go down hill so fast. After the 2 treatments he took, they checked him again and said it had spread to the brain. Then they wanted to go in and do some Gamma Knife treatments which is I guess spot treatments of radiation to his brain and he just told them no. Said he had been through enough and wanted to just enjoy what time he had left. I was working for him in his garage back in Febuary and he started to lose his breathe faster than normal, in March and April he started to get a cough which caused some pain in his chest, and thats when they diagnosed him with COPD. He went for a secong opinion at OSU and they was the ones who did the testing and figured out what all it was. They pretty much told him it was from welding... He was a avid body man from the 60's on up and started out in old hot rods with lead. Just goes to show what we love will kill us all someday! I still have a 31 Ford Model A pickup that I got from him and it will be with me till Im gone! I just wish I could've finished all his cars up for him. We was building a 32 Ford Panel Delivery with a 2.3 turbo and auto out of an 87 Turbo Coupe. Im still working on it though for his wife to drive. Hopefully get it done someday for her.

Brian I am sorry for your loss. Hang in there and keep your head up. MY wife has Carcinoid cancer. Everyday is different for her. She has some very good days and then just out of nowhere she has some real bad ones. We have been fighting this for 5 years now. She gets treated here locally and up at the Cleveland Clinic. Its just a race to beat this before it gets to her liver. Once that happens it becomes terminal. You dont realize how much you take for granted everyday until it hits home. And like someone else said in an earlier post. Its always the people that try to do the right things that get screwed.

Thanks Steve! I hope she can beat it! I feel for anyone that ever has to go through it. I just feel with all the money spent on cancer research that there is a cure out there. Just wish it wasnt due to greed that they would share it with us all. Alot of good people miss out on the best years of their life dealing with this shit. I wish you all the best in your fight with it and hope you can overcome.

Sorry for your loss and I have lost several family members to cancer. I used to do cancer research and had 2 publications on a drug we were working on. I think it is because people do not understand how it works that they blame the government. First off cancer is extremely difficult to treat because of the variety and how it can mutate making drugs less effective or even useless over the years. You also have to worry about not only how it effects the cancer cells but the healthy cells. This why most chemo's make people so sick from the treatment because it is not just working on cancer cells but also healthy cells. The other issues are that when you do discover a drug that can work it's not like it can be used immediately, it takes years or decades for drugs to get on the market. Usually because FDA requires so many years of clinical trials etc.. and because of this if you started with 1,000 possible drugs you may end up with 4-5 that get on the market. And this is a necessary process, you don't want take a drug that cures liver cancer and find it out causes pancreatic cancer 5 years down the road. Also, I did research on our drug for over 4 years and it has not even gone to clinical trials so it might be 10-15 years before I would ever see it being used for treatment. However, I have to say the pharmaceutical companies are much worse than the oil companies, because they charge an astronomical price compared to what it really cost to make the drug. They know they can charge whatever they want and you will pay it.

Thanks for the insight. I know Rome was built overnight but it just sucks to see good people dieing everyday to this. All I can hope for is a cure soon so I dont have to see any other loved ones deal with it. Good luck and keep up the work!

Ya I hate seeing it too it just one of those things that it unfortunately takes time to develop. There are always new things being discovered everyday. And the future looks brighter everyday with cancer treatment. I remember doing a seminar on photo-dynamic therapy which is a really cool technique to a nerd like me. But anyway, I started by showing that in the 1960's testicular cancer only had around a 60% survivability rate. However, currently it has a survivability rate of around 95% or greater depending on if it has gone metastatic in the body.

Sorry to hear about this and hope things bet better for you.

I have been a supporter for the Wood Hudson Cancer Research Lab that is located in Newport, Ky. They are one of the leading research centers in the country and it's all non-profit. The head of the center drives a mini-van around and goes to many charity functions. They are looking at the cancer on a genetic level and trying to find out what genenome cause the growth and they share the info they find. Every dime that we have been able to donate to them has gone into research and not some calling agency or big CEO's pocket.

I lost my Grandmother back in the 70's to cancer and in the last 40 years many non-survivorable cancers are now being cured. Like posted above there's a lot that goes into a cure and we keep inching away at it every year.
