Do you have the install disc?

Back up your photos monthly or sooner, list the programs you use, then nuke and repave.

MalwareBytes is normally the first step though.

Its not an infection problem. It won't boot up. The dell screen comes up then the xp screen but then when tries to go to my desktop it just freezes

will the computer boot in safe mode? hit F8 at boot if you didn't know. I would suggest reload the computer to a previous state in order to get it to boot. If you don't know how I can give you directions. At least this will get you going again.

No it won't. I can get to the screen to go to safe mode but when it tries to boot into it, it locks up again.

sounds like it has an issue in the boot sector. I have seen this before on a couple of different systems. First make sure that the fan is kicking on in the tower and after that I would suggest taking out the hard drive and booting it up as a slave drive and pull all your personal stuff off. After that reinstall and the drive and do a system restore. This is just what I would do for an easy fix. I would have to have the computer in front of me in order to fix it any other way.

Yes the fan does turn on when you turn the computer on. Now as far as taking the the hd out and backing existing info up is beyond my expertise. I guess that is where I need to get a pro involved.

Well the wife just informed me to get this thing fixed asap. Is the Geek Squad any good and fairly priced? I would really rather stay with a shop in N. KY if possible or if someone on here can fix it I may bring it to you but I don't want it to be too terribly far way. I'm just don't want to get raked over the coals by disreputable shop.
