My wifes Mercury Montego had a low beam HID bulb go out the other day. When you first turn the lights on that bulb flashes like a strobe then goes out. The bulb type is a D1R and they want from 130-200 dollars for one bulb. Is there anyway to tell on these HID bulbs if they are blown or if it may be another issue before I shell out that much cash?

could be a ballast issue as well. could try swapping the bulbs and see if the problem stays or transfers

if the bulb is bad it shouldn't flash.
I am guessing you have a bad igniter or ballast.
