View Full Version : Fuel pump Q

When I flip the key over on my 89 GT, the fuel pump doesent quit cycling. Usually they cycle and stop until it's started, but not this one. Is it a bad relay? Any ideas are welcome, I'm going into the car to work on the heater and would like to fix this one next. Thanks in advance:bigthumb

Yeah, try another relay, see if that works.

Otherwise, I don't know.

mine did that and it ended up being the computer.......

you can check power to the relay. If it gets a signal to pull in then its computer related. if there is no signal power then the relay could be sticking closed sending power to the pump.

Ok, I'm no wiring guru, so could you put this into dumbass terms lol? First, where is the fuel relay located on an 89? Is it green like normal? Which pin should I check for power from the ecm? Sorry for being dumb, I usually got lucky and got perfectly working set-ups before.

couldn't tell you on the fox body. but once you find it you should be able to check everything. might want to go buy a haynes manual or something. that should have the wire colors to check for power.

I think so, I havent really gotten into it yet. I have a chiltons for it, so I'll get to reading it tonight. After I figure this one out, it's on to the heater issue lol...

I chased mine around too, even put a fuel pressure gauge on it just to make sure, and then as a last resort I pulled a bud's computer swapped them and that ended up being my problem.

I hope not, it's got an A9l in it and I really dont wanna have to replace it lol...

when you look at the relay you should see 4 wires on the bottom. there may be more but 4 are the key ones. the wiring schematic in the book should show which wires are the actual relay wires. Do like jeff said and try to swap relays first and see if its an easy fix. Fuel pump is simple logic. Just gotta break down the components lol

Put a new relay in it from the parts store they are not more then 10 bucks probably and if it doesnt fix it take it back and get your money back and use that towards a computer. If the relay doesnt fix it more then likely the ground circuit in the ECM is bad.

I'm gonna try to find a factory relay, Fastnotch2002 said he bought an aftermarket one once and it was worse than the one he replaced. ANyone have one laying around to sell???

Yep, the green fuel pump relay. I get hook ups from Oreileys, through work and my buddy manages it. Hopefully a relay fixes it though lol. I actually got one from Napa for my 5.0 ranger 4x4 build a few years ago, and it was less than $100. I think it was an A9P though, it was an AOD trans set up...
