So smog pump and egr are gone and the vac lines have been plugged. I was messing around under the hood and broke the stupid plastic vac tube that went to egr. So I started thinking about it and the only vac line I have still hooked up is going to the fuel pressure regulator from the 4 vac lines that come in through the fender on the passenger side. I looked at the vac tree on the driver side and there is one line that runs into the fender. MY ASSUMPTION IS THIS IS THE LINE THAT GOES TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENDER. The other lines off the tree (driver side) can be traced. So here is my question. Are those 4 plastic lines the only vac lines that are run off that vac tree line or are there other things that are run off those lines that I can't see?

Ben

I think I finally figured this one out... the four plastic line (red, white, green, pink) are all for egr. The red one is what supplies the vacuum (attached to the intake elbow), the other lines all run in the fender (passenger side) to solenoids that are used by the AIRB/AIRD/EGR and are supplied by the red vac line.

So bottom line, I plugged the intake elbow. If the red line is not supplying vac to the solenoids, then the other three vac lines are rendered useless. I pulled all 4 vac lines back through the fender, cut them and zip tied them to keep them out of the way. Put the fender splash guard back on, buttoned up and all ready to go.

I am super excited I got this done. I have a feeling between the red vac line and the 3 other ones, there was a leak in the plugs. Now I know 100% that is NOT the cause of any potential idle issues. Also while I had the splash guard off, I checked the vac lines tuked near the A-pillar and found one of them that basically disentigrated in my hand and had visible splits in the rubber vac line. So, replaced that and hopefully that eliminated yet another possible vac leak.

As of now I believe I have all the vac lines plugged properly, or replaced new so I can safely rule out any vac leaks as issues.

Between that and the busted ignition coil, I think my idle issues will be resolved once I get the base idle reset and timed properly.

SUPER HAPPY WITH THE PROGRESS SO FAR IN TRYING TO RESOLVE THIS!!!

Woot!!!

Do you have emissions testing in Delhi? If not then I would go ahead and get rid of the EGR system. You can pull the 3 soleniods on the back of the pass strut tower, the EGR valve right behind the throtle body, and theres a canister inside the pass fender. Understand that EGR has no negetive effects on performance since it doesnt opperate at WOT, but I dont want all that carbon going back through my motor.. do you? As for the vacuum tree you can also get rid of that, clean up the firewall area a bit. Hook up the FPR vacuum and a/c vacuum line (only if your keeping a/c) to the intake itself. That leaves the brake booster vacuum line and the cruise control vacuum line. You obviously need the brake booster line so hook that up to where the source line was going to the vacuum tree. If your cruise control actually works you can choose to keep it, if so then hook that line directly onto the intake manifold as well. You may need to add a vacuum nipple on the intake for that one, but you'll figure it out. Any other questions?

The egr has already been removed. The hard plastic vac lines (except the red one) were plugged with screws and dangling in engine bay. So basically last night I plugged the red one at the intake elbow and the removed the four hard plastic lines, so I should be good to go. I 'thought' I needed the red vac line, but after researching, that was also part of egr (which I didn't realize until last night). So I have basically done what you said, I just decided to leave the solenoids (which are hidden in the fender well so they won't be seen anyway. I just need to get the egr tuned out when I get my car tuned so the CEL doesn't come on for EGR

Thanks for the update though... All should be well now... crossing fingers!

If your car is old enough you wont get a CEL. I dont remeber the exact year but it was the later 90's fox's that would get the CEL from this.

I currently get a CEL for EGR. Had a buddy hook up the scanner and I can't remember the exact code number, but the description was for EGR... I need to get the motor back together and confirm that, but I am 95% sure it was an EGR code for the CEL...

Speaking of codes, does anyone know locally where they sell a code reader for my car (the $30ish dollar one)??? I found the equus 3145 online, but I really don't want to wait...

Auto Zone and Advance sell cheap code scanners. What year is your car? If it's a 94/95 or any fox 87 to 93 you will get an egr code and it will hold back timing at cruise and part throttle. There are egr eliminator plugs that will plug into the wiring harness and fool the computer into thinking it has egr still. The best route is getting a chip and turning all that foolish crap off.

I have always heard that if the ECU senses a malfunction with the EGR system it turns it off.

Have a 95... Picked up an LCD code reader at O'Reilly yesterday for $29.99 which is what I could find them for onlines, so I have that now.

So the EGR delete will pull back timing if it's not tuned out??? Interesting... I plan on tune this spring for sure. I am trying to get everything as baseline as possible. Timing, idle, vac leaks ruled out, etc. I am very close to having the stang back to working order. Waiting on a damn ignition coil, then at least I can get timing / idle set properly. Problem is, I keep adding stuff to my to-do list, LOL! Hoping to have it running by next week. Then once tax money comes in, I can order the chip, and the rest of the ignition stuff, LCA's, and I think I am going to get new o2 sensors (to be on safe side).

Anyway, thanks for the EGR info, that is helpful... might have to investigate the elim plug until I get it tuned.

Later.

That's incorrect. I had to turn it off on my race car through a chip because the pos PMS doesn't shut it or the thermactor stuff off, I was getting codes and it was causing issues with my car during a pass.

Do us all a favor and don't mail order a chip, go to Cincy speed or come up to see me and get a custom tune and chip that will work well with your combo.
I know what it's like getting a car together, I do it all day long. It's just one thing after another.

So even if its all gone and unplugged it is pulling some timing?? How much timing and under what conditions? Can I tune out the EGR with the TwEECer I just got?

95 you dif. have to have it tuned it will cause all kinds of problems with the way it runs my wife has a 94 mustang and when she popped a head gasket cuz she dont look at the gauge lol. then it was time for me to fix it so my fix was heads nitrous cam intake throttle body 125 shot plate system headers x-pipe flowmaster 03 cobra wheels (try to explain why you need to buy rim when you are working on the motor and her dad didnt like the nitrous but i need something to do when i drive it lol) delete smog, egr and did ignition and it ran like crap it would surge i had it tuned by adam at cincy speed and it was the egr that caused all the problems and the fact the factory ecu does not like changes he tuned it out to 258\320rwhp motor and 363\480 rwhp on spray and it runs smoother than when it was stock no flat spots in the driveability sct make a sweet switch chip for dif. tunes make sure you change the water temp sensor and the intake air sensor it will make tuning so much smoother those 2 thing will also pull timing
