So I'll post a pic tomorrow.

I spent damn near all day driving. To lima and back. I pick up a very clean 90 GT.

I noticed a few things today. My Tundra tows damn well. Daytons high ways around the city suck.....
A few others were out picking up their toys too.

I passed a guy towing a Terminator vert, another with an Aluminator in his bed.
Its funny how Ford guys can always spot another. I tried to wave to the ones I could. I was moving at a fair pace.

great find!! now i know what the paint scheme i was GOING to go with looks like lol what kind of power is she making?

2Kblacksleeper
12-28-2010, 02:08 PM
In the sun it looks alot better. Bottom is burnt orange and top is gloss black with a metal flake like on the new black SHO.

I'm not sure on power yet. I need to fix a charging issue. Get it timed properly fix the seat tracks. Its got a mild cam and bolt ons. This is my first manual car though.

What should the timing be set to? Is it 12* BTDC at idle?

I like it!

Needs new headlights and a pinstripe or something to break up the 2 colors! Other than that.... I think thats a nice find!!

yea that is a very nice car i seen it on CL. it has been on there for awhile. nice car though. i will have a cam for it later if interested it is a e-cam. and i also have a complete 5 lug swap for it to with the wheels and tires for $650.00. let me know if u are interested

2Kblacksleeper
12-28-2010, 03:56 PM
It has a cam already. Id like to do a 5 lug but i will wait till next winter. I'm trying to score a performance oriented forced induction kit for it. lol.

It needs a few things taken care of, but it will clean up nicely. Made the guy an offer and he took it. Not close to listed price. I think i got a good deal for what i have in it.

I could use a set of extended seat tracks. If anyone has any?

New lights are in the future. the yellow kills the clean lines of it.

12-28-2010, 03:59 PM
Thanks Kevin. I origionally though it was red and black from the pics i first got. When i got there i saw it was Burnt orange. I thought huh, well i wanted a car this color anyway.
It was a nice suprise. lol

I have to fix the charging system, set timing. fix seat.....

Timing should be 12-14* btdc at idle right?

A set of the UPR tinted headlights would look very cool on that car with the paint that is on it. I would set the timing at 10 degrees at idle with the pill out of it. Then have it tuned with a chip on the dyno

2Kblacksleeper
12-28-2010, 04:48 PM
I'm sorry to ask a dumb question but what pill?

I was thinking some smoked headlights and with an HID upgrade.

Theres a spout connector in the harness coming from the dizzy. Once the car is warmed up, pull the lil grey (spout) connector out and it will idle down. Set your timing wherever you want, I usually go 14 drgrees myself, especially on a stick car. As long as it dont spark knock there, lock the dizzy down and your done. I would also crank the tps and clean the iac. I wish I woulda known you were coming to Lima, thats my stomping ground. I looked at this car when I was shopping around for the short bus. I thought his asking price wasnt too far off either!

2Kblacksleeper
12-28-2010, 06:07 PM
I figure a few things need an adjustment and it should be good to go.

Thats good to know about the 14* on a stick car. Thank you.

Its a good haul to Lima from Beechmont. I didnt want to say anything and jinx it. I've got bad luck with those kind of things. If it were not for bad luck I'd have none. lol

INSANEBA
12-28-2010, 06:14 PM
No kidding, I drove to Beechmont about 1 1/2 months ago to look at a car that was garbage. I even paid my womans gas in her jeep to follow me just incase I brought the car home and had any issues. Good waste of a day right there lol. I woulda looked it over for you, shoulda asked just to be safe... Glad it worked out for you though, and I personally wouldnt want a stang if it were an auto lol...

No one in my family has had a manual. My dad had some work trucks when i was alot younger. but was never able to drive them.

My last car was a manual c-4 so it was kind of like it. lol. I'm gonna try the real thing and see how it goes.

Can someone explain the difference in going with 14 timing over 12 per say? Or send me a link to read.

Car looks great! I would go with a set of smoked lights also. If its running good now (no pinging issues) then why not leave it at 12* for right now? just a thought

INSANEBA
12-28-2010, 10:44 PM
The more timing you can throw at it, the crisper/stronger it's gonna run. I set em at 14*, and as long as it doesent detonate (ping) as Metcalf said, I leave it. Beleive me, that 4* makes a nice difference... But I hate stock, and try to squeeze every bit out of em that I can lol...

I've always ran premium gas in my stangs.
Also that's 14* before topic dead center at idle with the spout disconnected after its warmed up right?

2Kblacksleeper
12-28-2010, 11:42 PM
Stangman, people are starting to get desperate where they will cut down on loans. What ever will lower the monthly outgoing money. I feel safer having a car free and clear that way if I did loose my job, worst case senario id let my tundra go back.
Then id still have transportation.

I hope that never happens but you never know anymore.

There is a little square plug right by the distributor. You pull that out when setting base timing. It stops the computer from advancing the timing. It should be the only connection there with no wires coming out of it. (just wires going in)

Yep, advance is before. It'll run so much better, but take a test drive and romp on it a couple times to make sure it doesent spark knock. As long as it's quiet, your good, enjoy!:bigthumb

Ok, thank you.
I dont know exactly what it is set at now. The guy said it was like 10* at 3000 rpm ?

I know that's wrong as hell. The guy had the motor apart the week before I went to get it. I want told til I was already there.

What'sThe best way to start out from there? I've got a very good mecanic friend helping me. I just like to know what's going on.
He is a chevy guy so I always have to hear about it. lol he's a good guy though.

With that little spout connector pulled, it will have the same timing at all rpm's. That way you do not have to take rpm's in to account to set the base timing.

I understand what you are trying to say, but what I was asking John was why he wanted to do it. You are saying 14* as if every 302 needs/runs better at 14* REGAURDLESS of what camshaft it has or other parts are installed. (from the way he is talking doesnt sound like its all stock to me, i.e. has a camshaft already) All I was wondering was if there is a reason he thinks it needs more timing (like something was wrong) or if he was just trying to get max power out of it.

I want say 80% or so max power. It has headers, unknown cam, 75mm mass air, trick flow intake, long runner version.

I just am not sure where to set it at. Im having my mechanic buddy help me alot. Well he does it and I try to learn but I need to know what to tell him. Hes a die hard chevy guy. Damn good mechanic though.

I want a good drivable tune persay. Im going to go to cincy to make sure its good.
I'm hoping to put a turbo kit on in a couple months so I will get a full tune then.

Thanks again everyone for your help.

i know the car and that licoln motor is not a high output motor so the way the spark plug wires are wired up are different then the ho motor it ran like it had a cam in it when we worked on it then we wired it up like the old 302 and it ran great but no lopeing like a cam was in it

Sounds like to me, John should check and make sure the firing order is correct (or just see what it is for sure).

Hey its always good to have a good mechanic around! Just tell him its really a chevy motor hiding in a ford block :bigthumb that should help! lol

John

the pistions, cam, and heads is the deference in the lincoln motor. they got like a 86gt head none h.o.cam that has the old 302 firing order 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 the h.o. is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. and the lincoln has a true flat top pistion no valve relief like the h.o. has.the only way i know to check is take it apart. lol

Well if it's a non HO wired up like a HO, without an HO cam then theres your problem. I'd rather it run right without a choppy idle rather than run like poo and sound lumpy. Switch 4,5,3,7 around and see if it smoothes out. I know mine lumps just a tiny bit with 14* in it, but no where near enough for me lol...

I'll start a build thread in a day or two.

Before I found it it wasnt a ho motor, I was going to throw a on 3 kit or so and have some fun.
Now I'm debating weather to still go that route or buy a 351 rebuild it and put it in for a litle while then go boosted on a budget?
I want to stay fuel injected on this car.

FirstIs to get it running right. Then the real debate begins. Any thoughts?

93snake
12-31-2010, 01:01 AM
Depends, if you are going to change out the motor anyways (to put an ho 302 in), then going 351 might be a good idea (and alot of fun in the meantime) and would hold more hp when you add some boost. I agree with keeping the fuel injection even if you go 351. But I look forward to hearing what you find out about your current setup... btw just curious, do you have any engine/engine compartment pics?
