View Full Version : Which heads?

Looking to give the lx a little love.
Right now the car has the stock bottom end, the explorer intake, some aftermarket shorties and the smog pump removed.
I am not looking for a race car just something I can jump in and enjoy. Maybe twice a year take to the track and hammer it a few passes.
I am debating on sticking with a set of gt40p heads or going with a set of aluminum heads like a set of edelbrocks or even the x swirl heads.
Pros and cons of each?
Anything special you have to do to the explorer heads? What year explorers do you need to get?
Thanks in advance.

I've got some P heads if you decide to go that route

I don't think you could go wrong with a set of twisted wedge or highports. Both of them are basically limitless ported if you decide to do more with the car in the future.

id stay away form the x heads they are not much better than p's.
i had good luck with twisted wedge and you can run a decent cam with them without notching pistons.

twisted wedge or high ports run killer with a x-cam and 150 shot wet.i had this set up on a 90 gt an went 7.21 i thought that was pretty good.

twisted wedge heads and an anderson n21 cam or a tfs 1 cam. stay away from the xheads there a waste of $. Do a set of ported pheads before spending the $ on x heads.

Doing a little research has me leaning towards a set of p heads for the cost/benefit factor. Maybe in a year or two I will put together a 331 and get a set of TW or high ports.

The only drawback to P's is you need the FRPP shorty headers for P heads.

You would be money ahead to just buy the TW heads now, that way you would already have them...
