grabbed a exploder intake and gt40p heads over the weekend. . Any advice on changing heads or is it pretty straight forward? what should i check for on these heads before i throw them on my motor? Once last thing, these are pretty dirty, what should i use to clean them up. I plan on just keeping this cheap and running the stamped rockers, springs, and ho cam i have. Any advice would be appreciated. Its something id like to do on my own to gain the experience since ive never done anything like this, plus i hate to pay someone to work on something for me. Will prolly start on this next month, still have to grab intake and head gaskets, new head bolts and p headers. thanks in advance guys.

Get some valve lapping compound and a hand lap tool. Take the springs off hand lap the valves. Spend a couple bucks on a new set of springs and seals. Clean the head surface up with razor blades do not aggressive with power tools and tear up the head or block surface. Use a torque wrench and follow the Manual.

I did this swap last oct with a cobra intake instead of the explorer intake, all you have to do is drill and tap the # 5 runner for that sensor, make sure you change your valve springs or your wasting your time doing the swap, I ran the comp cams 942-16 springs, I got them at jegs for around $80 and my car cranked to 6K no problem. From what Ive seen the stock crimped headers will work, and the new bbk shorty headers look like they will clear but I havnt tried them, I went the safe route and bought the Ford Racing shorty headers for the pheads, use felpro 9333 pt-1 head gaskets and arp head bolts that way you can add a power adder later if you want to. I have a nib set of arp head bolt if you want them PM me an offer. If you could find bcam or tfs-1 cam cheap and throw it in there you would make some pretty decent power with a good tune and other supporting bolt ons. I made 280whp 320tq with a similar set up and the car was a blast to drive. good luck.
