This is my first mod motor....i know nothing about them beyond some random magazine facts. I'm gonna be doing a full tune up and i'm open to suggestions on everything from plugs, plug gap, oil brand/weight/filter etc. This is a PI motor if that makes a difference.

I run mobil 1 5w-20, Motorcraft FL-820S oil filter Unless there is an oil change special that includes a K&N Oil filter, Autolite or Motorcraft plugs gapped at .054 unless your running a power adder.

I love NGK iridiums in my mod motor. And I run valvoline 5w30 with a motorcraft filter, my mod motor is older so like stated above, yours will need 5w20

yea once you get some miles on it switching to 5w30 wouldnt be a bad idea, 5w20 is on the thin side and if the rings are worn a bit you burn oil like crazy.

5w20 of whatever your preference oil is, i run Royal Purple in the race car.
FL-820S motorcraft filter, walmart usually has the best price on those, a WIX filter is also a good choice, i think the p/n is 51372 or something close to that.
NGK TR55 sparkplugs gapped .50-.54ish
If you plan on taking it to the track a bit, new fluid in the trans and diff. can't hurt, just so you know what's in it and that its full. Royal Purple/Redline or whatever premium fluid you prefer for those. :bigthumb

I buy the motorcraft 5w20 and fl820s and run it in most of my engines around here, I abuse my motors and they last about 250,000 miles so I would say it does the job. i pulled the ranger motor at 235,000 because buddy blew it up not knowing how to shift. the 4.6 was close to the same mileage and I pulled it over oil consumption.

thumbs up on the factory motorcraft 5/20 blend. Thats what I used and had no issues. They love 4.10 gears by the way and it doesn't hurt the MPG on the highway if you care about that. Hard to believe but I got 25-26 on long trips with bolt ons and exhaust, no LT's.

It has about 106k, but those are duty miles so....5w20 or 5w30?

i know i had a 4.30 in my mach-1 and it got over 20 mph and it had 180k on it. i took it to the track every weekend and sprayed it with 125 shoot and ran the motorcraft oil without any issues.

modular motors a recomended to use a low viscosity oil like 5w-20

180k in a mach 1?! Someone drove the crap outta that thing! I also recommend a low viscosity also because a lot of oil stays in the heads of those things. Like was also said once you see some blue smoke on start up when you're running it hard i'd make the change to 5w30.

the thicker the oil the longer it stays on the bearings. At least thats how Nick McKinney explained it. All the taxis down in FL mostly run on diesel spec oil and run perfectly fine for 200k+ miles. He takes the heads off to use for porting and says you barely see any forms of wear and actually prefers to use those type of heads to build on. just food for thought.

the modulars have hypereutectic pistons so they run tight clearances to the cylinder wall is why they need a low viscosity oil.

0w5 works great in my 2V lol
Up till 99 run 5w30
99+ run on a nice synthetic 0w20 , 5w20
Wix filter only in my opinion # 51372, second option is a good ol Motorcraft 820S
