The car is my mother in laws focus. It's a 00' 2.0 SOHC SPI auto car. It only has 48,000 miles.

The car loses power under accel and has no power under load. Idle is horrible- no miss but it is rough. Car will free rev in neutral fine but won't get out if it's own way in gear. exhaust putters @ idle. This just started 2 weeks ago out of the blue after a fill up. Fuel has been exchanged already.
Maf is reading correctly (3.5 - 19 g/s)
O2 voltage and percentage is switching correctly
Long fuel trim is nonexistent- can't figure it out given my PCM input from the O2 is normal
Short fuel trim is trying to make up the balance but is otherwise normal.
TP is correct.
FP is 280 KPA and doesn't drop under 277 under load.
No CEL
Pending code of IAT but no fault set

Thing's that have been tried: dropped the cat out of line, swapped MAF- replaced upstream O2 as well as bailed an alarming quantity of sand from the fuel tank. I know the sketchy history of fuel pumps with these and my father in law replaced it automatically after doing some E-search and finding the sand
.
My scanner can't do power balance or check injectors so I am at my wit's end at this point.

Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Physical timing has already been checked as well as thru the scanner.

I had a few older cars do this when the torque converter was taking a poop. The old luminas would do this. After a quick unplug it was good as new... for a lumina. lol

Also had coil packs do this on a jeep liberty.

^^^ with sean, maybe the coil pack. With the sand, you mean like sand-sand??? I would think that would be the main thing there, maybe plugged the injectors?

I Totally missed the sand thing. That sand will settle but like in the ocean when its agitated it can flow everywhere. Other than fuel filter change I would drop the tank and flush it as well as any lines and anything else you can flush. That could be a real mess.

I think you need to decide the direction of attack. Do you fix it thinking the sand has something to do with it? For that route I would look at the fuel filter and see how much sand is in there. I am guessing there is a filter in the tank as well. (like a sock in the older cars) If theres not much sand in the filter chances are I would think not much made it to the filter or past it. If its full of sand then you may want to continue with the fuel system all the way to the injectors. Or proceed like its just a car not running right. Then I would go with tq converter, cat converter, and coil packs. Coil packs first if they arent to high priced.

Car got a pump and filter Friday night when the sand was found.

The coil was replaced last month due a #4 misfire. I yanked it off last night and swapped it out @ autozone since secondary ignition seemed the only likely cause and sure enough the POS coil they gave him was bad.

I'd like to give autozone parts a big :flipoff:

Thanks for everybodies input- I shoulda known better than to leave an autozone part above my suspicion.
