I can do that, often times it is cheaper by far to install a good used one and I can do that as well. I have tons of experience with taurus's I put nearly 200,000 miles personally on the last one I had. Just a thought but did you check to make sure the converter was not stripped out, they are known to strip out the pump drive. I install hardened splines in the converter when I do them.

not to hijack the thread, but I have an 00 Taurus with the dohc v6. We had the transmission rebuilt a few hundred miles ago. Had a new front clutch pack put in and torque converter. Now anytime it sits for more than a full day it slowly drips fluid out the top of the transmission dipstick. I have no clue what would cause this.

yes, it will require removing the transmission. Easiest way is to replace the valvebody/pump assembly. Parts are high but not much labor invloved as the transmission does not need to be completely dismantled. Just take side cover off and replace literally everything under it. We can try going through it and fixing only what is needed but then labor goes through the roof. My wifes windstar had issues like that and kicked my butt. I bought a new valvebody and pump assembly and they sent me one with the incorrect plate on it. I know better now but I assumed the parts would be correct, especially considering the cost. In the end I had to buy a new plate from ford and correct the checkball locations because as they shipped it to me it was all wrong.

Alan, are all the Taurus like this or just certain years????
I was gonna look for one but found a 132k mile 1996 Accord instead. Gas mileage is about the same.

For the most part all the taurus and windstar transmissions from 92-05 are the same. They gave them different designations but they didn't change much. The biggest problem I see is ripped out pump drive in the converter.

Thanks for the info Alan....just found out my friend decided to scrap the whole car, just wasn't worth it! (I offered him $20 be he said he would never sell a friend a car!)

Unfortunately unless those cars are either less than about 7 years old or in very nice shape they usually are not worth fixing. It is hard to put more into a car like that than it will sell for afterwards when it's worth about $300 in scrap.
