gonna put a new steel distributor gear on this distributor i have and was wondering if any of you guys have ever froze the gear itself to help it slide on rather then pressing it on?...my dad said he used to use this method back when he was a machinist to put bearings onto things, let me kno your input or any other way of doing this rather than a press, and i kno MSD does these for free but i dont have the time to ship it out and and all that crap, lemme kno

Actually you would want to freeze the distributor shaff and heat the gear. It would probably slip on then.

Hmmm..I think my dad was thinking the opposite because the inner hole would get bigger

According to the laws of physics.
Heat expands, makes it bigger.
Cold contracts, makes it smaller.
Haven't you ever got into cold water and what happens? Your junk shrinks. Classic Sienfeld.

haha ya thats kinda what i was thinkin but i think my dad was thinking that actually when it does shrink, it will make the hole bigger because the sides are shrinking, see what im sayin?

Try it and report back.
I know it works with the sleeved bushings, in the rear end housing, but it is the OD that is made smaller there.
