Finally got everything right on my 96 mustang that i swapped a v8 into....i took it out for the first time and it was going great. Then i heard a noise..sound like a squeal like my power steering or something. Open the hood and the noise had stopped. Then it started again...so i revved the enigne up and i see smoke coming out frokm below my header. I look down and the car is on fire.

After i had the fire under control i took a look. My starter had grounded itself and was running while the engine was and i guess my revving it up just lit it right on up.

so now i am back to not having a running car and having to put more money it. but that's the way projects go i guess.....sometimes it's just frustrating o well....back in the garage i go!!

How easy was a v6 to 4.6 swap in those cars? Sounds neat. Sucks to hear about the starter, hope ya get it fixed

not hard at all.. if you have a v8 donor car...still wouldn't be hard if you didn't have one. i suggest trying to use the v6 radiator and not a v8..it don't fit

Really? Why does the v8 radiator not fit?

Ok, here's a story to make you feel better.

When i swapped my 347 in, it came with a 7qt oil pan. It was the style pan that is basically a modified stock pan with extra capacity welded onto the sides of the rear sump. We put everything together, drop the engine in, bolt up the mounts and headers, radiator...the whole thing. Then i crawl under to put the starter in...and the fucking oil pan where the extra capacity is added on, is completely blocking access to put the starter in. The "wings" that are added to the pan come out underneath where the starter goes so there's literally no way possible to put the starter in with the engine in.

So i have to take EVERYTHING back out, pull the engine, swap the pan out for a stocker, then i decide i want to swap the oil pump to a standard capacity since i now have a 5qt pan. So i put it all back together again, crawl under the car and put the starter in, finish getting everything put back together, go to start it...and the fucking starter doesn't work. The same starter that i drove the car into the garage with, has just shit out on me. So i had to swap it out again.

Fun fun.

Man that is worse than mine...projects are a pain til they are all completed and buttoned up.

The v8 radiator is too wide to fit in the location that the v6 radiator does. It sitting in there crooked and is only being held in there by the over flow tank...which by the way doesn't fit properly either. i need to cjange it back to the v6 stuff but i am afraid that it will not be up to the task to cool such a big enigne.

Are the core supports different or something?

that's what it is looking like...i really couldn't tell since my donor car front end was destroyed...it looks like the v6 mounting oads are about 1 to 2 inches shorter than the v8 radiator

my car has a 4cyl rad in it and it cools just fine so i dont see why the v6 one wont work

I dont see why the car itself would be different from a v6 to v8. Are you sure you just aint getting it to seat properly?

yeah...if you put on side of the radiator in the other side sits out about to inches.... i thought maybe it was upside down but no luck..it is just a little wider from what the v6 is

Make sure when you install the starter that you have the right air gap between the gears. If it's too tight the starter gear may get caught and then you can have a problem like you described. I had that once but the starter wouldn't stop turning the motor (didn't have the ignition on) and I had to disconnect the battery in a hurry but I still burnt up the armature.

see it did that once before but it stopped...now i didn't change the starter on the engine. I'm just wondering if the accident the engine was in knocked the starter in a weird position
