The explorer 4.6 2v blocks are aluminum.

If it came out of F series pick up it is probably a windsor iron block which would be the same as what came in the 99 and some 2000 GT's.

No, the cast blocks are the same between the F-series truck (windsor) and the mustang (romeo). In fact, the Windors came in the 1999 and early production 2000 Mustang GT's because the Romeo plant caught fire. Externally the Windsors 13/14 bolt cam covers, as opposed to the Romeos 11 bolt cam covers were the only real difference. Rotating assembly was a different story. Blocks though, same.

The 2001+ Explorer 4.6's used the WAP Aluminum Block that the 1999+ Cobra's used.

ok, all i know is the engine is out of a late 90s f150 and the engine wont hold compression on the 2nd cylinder. i know its a cast block and 2v engine. will it bolt up to a 98 mustang? mine 98 is a v6 right now but i wanna swap it eventually after i build the engine, i just wanna make sure im not wasting my time on something that wont bolt in. i know there will be alot to swap over. thanks for all the help guys.

The long block would drop right in but if you are going to to through the work to swap an engine I would suggest at least looking for something with PI heads.

well its at my work. our A tech pulled it out and i know its out of a truck. im only paying 50 bucks for it and it ran when it cam in, just ran like shit. i found a set of heads i want to put on it and a rotating assembly because im going all out with this engine unlike my 306 i built. this is going to get a complete forged bottom end, cnc ported heads and im not sure what intake i want yet. i was looking into some comp cams for it too. when all is said and done im hoping to make 600+ na and 800+ boosted so i want to make the bottom end bullet proof for the supercharger or turbos i throw on it later.

For your goals, I believe a 4 valve is in order and boost, even for the 600HP mark. It just wont happen N/A on a 2 valve.

Trucks were bad to blow head gaskets and burn up coil packs on the passenger side. Apparently there was a tremendous amount of heat soak on that side. May want to start looking at teh head gasket.

idk, im going to go with it and if it makes 600+ thats sweet. if not i can say i tried. that would be awesome if it was just a head gasket, that would meand i could sell the rotating assembly if someone wanted it and the block would be good still. thanks 2-8-1 for more info.

If you need a cast iron car block I will have one in a few days that I will sell cheap.
I like using the markVIII blocks and cranks for street cars that are NA.

You either want to make big N/A horsepower, or big boosted horsepower, but you're not going to get both. I think a realistic N/A goal for you would be 350-400 to the wheels, and 600 is doable with boost. If you make it to 600 rwhp N/A, then you will make a lot of money from some engine builders that would like to know secrets that they have yet to figure out.

Agreed, there have been many people to say they have "tried", including big name builders with 10's of thousands of dollars in their engines. It wont happen N/A on a 4.6 2V Based modular.
