I come outside this morning at 6:50 to start my car to warm it up for work. Ya know, to be easy on parts and such. I start it, and hear a weird slap/knock noise just once and it goes away. So I chalk it up to the 32degree temp, and go inside to get my stuff together to leave. 7 mins or so later, I come back outside to get in and take off like any other normal day. I look down and notice the volt gauge is super low, and the amp light is on. Hmm, thats not a good sign. I try turning the steering wheel, and yep, no power assist! So I shut it off, pop the hood and sure enough, no belt! So I roll the car forward, and as I do I hear a (crack). I walk to the back of the car, and there is mty belt laying on the concrete split in half for the most part. So I took the Jeep sonce the F-150 is in the garage torn apart and make it on into work. So now I'm wondering, was it just a janky belt that went? Or is there an underlying problem??? The car was short belted to delete the smog pump, and it seemed a lil on the loose side to me before, but it stayed on well over 5krpm's in the past. So I guess we'll see after work. Hoping it's not something that will require too much $$. I'm planning on pulling the motor and going through it all this winter...

Check to make sure everything turns free. Could be a locked up pulley, water pump, or alternator.

Its typical in the cold for a week belt to break. Just spin the pulleys, make sure they spin freely and throw a belt on it. I bet its fine. What bothers me is it was running for some time with no coolant flow....

Mine did that one cold ass morning. I hit the remote start button and it fired right up. 10 seconds later I here the starter grinding on the flexplate from it trying to start an already running engine. So I shut it off and pop the hood. The Belt was busted, not turning the alternator causing the remote start to think the engine wasnt running since it wasnt seeing charging voltage.

Long story short,Power steering pump was locked up.

I'd try a 1/2" shorter belt, while your at it.

Lol, I did pretty much everything on this list. Everythig sun fine, so I just put a 1/2-3/4" shorter belt on it. It actually made the short belt route fit better. i had to persuade the belt on the alt, but way better! Short bus lives for only $18.49, ad I can get back to my F-150 lift install now lol...
