Talk to Modular head shop about their custom ground bullet cams.

^^^^What Alan said^^^^
I'll be using a set of Nick's stage 5 cams in my new engine.
The Comp 262's are decent but to install the 270's properly you really need valve reliefs. The same for the Hitech stage 2's. I currently have the 270's and we had to retard them I think 4.5 degrees to get enough clearence. It makes good horsepower but a buddy with VT stage 1's makes a the same power but with a lot more torque because he didn't have to retard the cams.

Just throw some 262s in and be done. Oh and get the trick flow crank sprokets and degree them in ;)

I run the 262s in my car and I'm very happy with them (Alan knows they work, haha). At the time, I really thought they were the best decision. The 270s had about 5 hp on the top end according the the dyno graphs I saw, but they gave up a ton of low end torque compared to the 262s. I haven't kept up with the current offerings, but I've heard a lot of good things about the modular head shop cams.

i would like something that moves the power band up so i can shift a little higher and i would love to pick up 20-30hp

The size of the dish doesn't matter. The valve comes in to contact with the edge of the piston.
This shows where a notch needs to be for an NPI piston.

...and this is for a PI piston

I think they sound good at idle, and I don't really know what an f cam sounds like. My mustang dynoed 250 rwhp and 280 lb-ft torque. It had an aftermarket h-pipe with 2 high flow cats, everything else was a stock PI engine down to the paper air filter and stock cat-back. If you do the math, it was making close to 300 hp at the crank; stock, the PI engines are rated for 260hp.

With a stock converter I wouldn't change the cam until you plan on doing a converter, if you do the comp 262 or somethign similar would be max, but if you have a stock converter do that first it will do more for you by far.

Converter, gears, cams and tune. Roughly in that order, but you'll need a good tune to make the most out of any or all of these.
