Hey guys I got a 351 block last night from a buddy on trade. It's a 69 block freshly bored .060, I am goin to build it to be a turbo motor. I know the 69s had a 9.48 deck height compared to the later model 9.50 I was wondering if there are certain pistons I am gonna have to run do to the shorter deck height. I wanna keep compression around 8.5 ish if possible. Anyone who has built a 69 block have any opinions with there experience please share I wanna get things right the first time around.

Being as you are limited on the RWHP you can make by using a oem block wh don't you bump compression to 10:1 or so and run e85 ? It would make monster power low in rpms allowing you to keep the rpms low allowing the block a chance to live

What is the safe power a 351 block can handle I talked to some guys on the corral that made 700hp with the older 351 blocks.

that year blk put together properly can withstand that power level (700) with no issues, thats fwhp not rwhp

I've always been told that 750 rwhp is the limit but I have no proof that it will handle that

K I was wanting 600 reliable rwhp. If I went NA what compression would u guys recommend

are you building a drag car or a street car? how much street driving?

Street strip that's kinda why I was leaning towards the forced induction

12.5:1 on e85....
Man what's the buzz with e85 is it that much better. Maybe I run that in my motor in car now

i have heard alot of good things about e85 lately an obviously it works i thought about running it in my car i would imagine a 12.5:1 compression 351 with e85 would be a monster power wise

Paul408 runs a turbo 351 block. And runs the corn fuel. I'm sure he has some insight for ya.

Yes I knew this, but thanks for the Info. I have spoken with them on several occasions. If I go turbo route that's the kit I will be looking into.

Keep the cubes around 351-357. Real big cubes require big Turbo to be efficient. Keep the rpm reasonable like 6500 and keep the timing reasonable and the stock block 351 can last a while. The 351 Windsor uses a 3" main bearing that does not like rpm. The 2 bolt main is bad for moving around also. It is not ideal for a high power big cubes Turbo or heavy nitrous motor but keep it mild and it can work. J

I am going to keep it stock stroke for that reason, I was also goin to put a main girdle on it to do what it can to keep the mains from walking. Thanks for tips

alright guys i got the motor figured out i am going turbo. Now for the trans what would you guys suggest its gonna be mainly a drag car with the occassional trip to town. would you recommend a c4, powerglide, or a manual.

I feel real men shift gears.... That said it will be faster with a auto as you lose boost pressure between shifts with a stick

I think you should ditch the 351 and put an LSX in it! :bigthumb
I'd love to see you keep the manual trans, but I'm not sure how good it would spool.

The lsx would be sweet but the power he's planning on putting to it would be pretty ruff on a five speed I think we both know he's set on a auto he has gotten some good prices on c4s but we where talking to a guy yesterday that recommended a powerglide

Glide or Th400. C4s are expensive to make last and you dont need overdrive. A stick car would not be ideal with the Turbo as a drag car. What is your Goal ET wise?

get ahold of lonnie at Extreme Automatics. his stage 1 th400 will handle anything you can throw at it with a stock block and his customer service is top notch

I would like to see high 9s to low 10s. Motor will be in my coupe weigh around 2600 with driver.

If that was my goal as a drag car I would skip the Turbo make the 69 block into a 408-418 NA with a good converter you can run high 9's low 10's all day every day at that weight

Yea its mainly a strip car with the occasional trip to town to beat up on the ricers

I really wanna keep a manual trans if possible. What would be some turbo tips to help keep boost during powershifting. I was looking into a faceplated tko600 from wally at promotion. Would it help to run a smaller turbo or not.

I know of one coupe with a 351w(363 cu in) with some trick flows a small cam and a 70mm masterpower turbo with a tremec 3550 and 3.27 gears that went 10.30's@139-140 and he drove it everywhere!

It was a very simple combo and worked awesome! The car had almost no lag between shifts! The car dynoed around 610hp to the tires!

I have looked at these two options I looked I to a c4 from PA. As far as a powerglide who has a good reputable trans and converter.

Yes I agree. Car weighed 2880 last year full interior, battery from my diesel truck ha, and all stock suspension. So with a fuel cell, lightweight battery, full tubular suspension with coil overs, aluminum heads and strip interior I don't see why 2600 +or- some isn't possible.
