This is a long winded post so please bear with me. Well this has been a very difficult decision to make. I have been in the fire service for 20 years. It has been an amazing journey. I have seen the highest of high and the lowest of low for the people in my community. I am currently a shift Captain. I have 2 Lts and 7 Fire/Paramedics/EMTs on my unit. We are a family. That has been the hardest part telling them I am leaving. I will miss being a part of their lives every third day and beyond.

I feel I have been a part of something special. I came in and helped transform a fully volunteer service into a career professional department. I can look back and see my fingerprints thru out the department and its changes.

I have learned so much. And probably the most rewarding has been learning about mentoring others. I have seen many come and go and turn out to be absolutely the finest public servants they can be. It makes me feel I have done something to better the world I am in. It brings a tear to my eye thinking of all of you and how proud I am of you. It has been a pleasure serving the residents of my community and thank them for the opportunity to have done so.

I am going to the private sector. I am going to be a medic for an off shore drilling company. The pay and benefits will be a welcome thing for my family. I will be on a 21 on and 21 day off schedule. So my family and I will be making some big transitions. I do this for them because their daddy cares that much for them. What was once a honorable way to make a fair wage and fair benefits gets tougher every year. For those that argued that the public sector made as much if not more than private sector. My only response is .

And please pray for the crew that has to be stuck out at sea for 3 weeks straight with me. BWAHAHAHA!

I've learned throughout life. We usually have to make sacrafices for the better of things. Your 20 years of service has definetly been appreciated. I hope this opportunity works out for the best.

Congrats Dale and best of luck to you and your family.

It's lonely at sea, even on a platform. Don't get close to the edge, and don't bend over in the shower. Good luck.

Be safe man, I know some guys down in Texas that have had great luck with the offshore drilling careers, whatever aspect you may be part of.

Dale,

I assume that means you will be moving?
Good luck, I'm sure it will be exciting. Snap some pictures and post them up. I have always been intrigued about how things work on those platforms.

I am not moving. I will be working for Seadrill as a Medic. Basically a doc in the box on the rig. It's enroute from Singapore. It will be 250 miles off the coast of LA. They will be flying me back and forth.

Well my last shift at Pierce is tomorrow. It is bittersweet. I loved my job and what I did. I am thankful to my Chief and residents for the opportunity to help protect lives and property. I get off Monday morning. Monday afternoon I fly to Houston for 2 weeks of training. First week of training will be getting my international medic certifications, learning how to do sutures etc. The second week I will be getting my BOSIET training. I fly home for 4 days then I fly to Trinidad and meet the rig. Then I will take a cruise thru the Bahamas till we get to our destination, 250 miles off the coast of LA. How many people can say their work commute consists of a 2.5 jet flight and 2.5 hour helicopter trip???
Here is a clip of BOSIET training, looks like fun.
