What's the rule of thumb on aligning headlights? Isn't it something like park 25 feet from a wall, point them 4 feet up and move the beams towards each other????

I installed new headlights in my Lincoln and the alignment is way out of whack.

Ive always done this. Have the car close to the wall and align them straight on. Then put a piece of tape on the wall where they are at. Then back up about 20-25ft and then adjust them where they are about 6" below the tape marks. Seems to do alright for me.

I do it by driving a dark road I've driven many times. You can easily tell if they are too high or too low just based on how they light up the road. I've done the height at a distance thing to get it close before hitting the road.. but you really should drive a road you're familiar with and check it by eye. If they are too low, it's easy to tell, you just can't see far enough. If they are too high, the roadway just in front of the car will not be lit up. I can dial in headlights perfectly about three adjustments/road trials. Your eyes (based upon the thousands of hours they've spent looking at roads lit up by headlights) are way more useful than any rule of thumb. You can get a better beam spread by eye too.. a slight tweak at the end of the height adjusting iterations can even out the beam spread by a great deal.

I drove this past weekend, and yesterday/today... world of difference when there's a helping hand/second opinion. Looks pretty good now!
