I am wanting to get opinions on what cam to use with GT40P heads. I have read some stuff on different sites but want to get opinions from Stangbangerz that have had personal experience using GT40P combos. I have a DSS 306 shortblock and have bought a set of P heads. I do know that the springs will need to be upgraded. Plan on using a Stealth intake with Holley 650 DP Carb.

My goal is to have something that sounds nasty and runs strong. Would be happy to be running low 13's. My car has a freshly built 8.8 with 3:73s and 5 speed.

What cam do you recommend? TFS-1, AFM n-41, E-Cam, ??

Any comments, suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I to asked this question and got the answer of the TFS 1 is the best, I purchased a tf spring kit from mike at dayton performance for my gt40S.

Or a comp cam xe270,264,282, or crane 2020,2021? If I was running a stang a 264 would be my choice I think for street, but full on race probably a xe 282 with a prosystems carb ported intake ad some p head modifycations and a 100 shot

Without any major headwork gt40p heads quit making power above .500 lift so anything bigger is just a waste if it's barely over .500 like .510/.512 it wouldn't matter much but it's something to think about

Ok, MOST people dont listen to me, butmaybe you will.....

CUSTOM GRIND!

I had a 306 with unported gt40Y heads, stealth intake and a 650, heads flowed 202 intake and 159 on exhaust... not a lot.... I have a custom cam ground by cam motion, 232/242@.50, with .510 lift on both sides, ground on a 108 CL, car was a street car, everyone said that cam was way too big, but not cam motion, with a B cam car was mid 12's, went to custom supposed to big cam, went 11.60-.80's at 115 mph.... in a fully loaded 93 coupe...

Custom cams are worth the money, no engine component is worth the gains as much as a cam, do it right....go fast without going broke, get the most you can...

I will use off the shelf cam for a car that I just wanna have fun in, but if you the most for ther money... go custom..ground for YOUR combo, not someone elses...

I figured.... oh well... mine made the most it could.. impressed a ton of people and to think it was 10 years ago too..when 11's were still fast for a street car..

Thanks for the input everyone. full force, impressive times.. how much did the custom cam cost if you dont mind me asking? I am leaning towards the AFM N-41 if I go with an OTS cam... have read lots of good stuff about this cam with a GT40P set up.

I am now starting to question whether I spend the money and get the GT40P's done or go with some aluminum heads.. By the time I figure up the cost of what I paid for the heads and add machine work, new springs, etc.. I will only be 300-400 shy of what I could buy a set of GT40X heads and end up with more HP gain... decisions, decisions.

Any advice on this also greatly appreciated. I have a few months to decide as the main concern right now is the body/paint as the car is currently at GOULDS where it will get a makeover.

if you have to do work to the GT40's then just go aluminum... I would in a heartbeat..

My cam was 350.00 back then, probably about same now, so worth it... made all the difference in the world...
