Just ordered Savage Mark II TRR-SR. Love shooting .22 LR. Wanted to step up to a match grade barrel and better trigger than my standard $150 Savage with cheap Simmons scope (even though it's amazing what it will do with Wolf Match ammo). Don't have much knowledge about scopes though. Looking for a budget scope under $125. Will just be doing target shooting during the day at 100yrds or less. Been looking at Mueller and the cheapest Vortex. Any input is greatly appreciated.

I have a Bushnell Banner 6-18x50 on my 10/22T, and I have a few Tru-Glo 6-24x50 scopes on a few other rifles, they have decent glass for the money. The Tru-Glo has target turrets, which is nice. The Bushnell is probably more durable. Check the link I posted, there are numerous options. Simmons has a Pro Hunter series w/sidefocus that is on clearance, and would fit with the tactical look of your TRR-SR.

I have the Vortex Viper on my 700. ABSOLUTELY the best scope I have ever bought. I will forever buy nothing but vortex. And the warranty is awesome.

I want to say the Crossfire line has been discontinued. They have a new scope coming out for 2012 to replace the crossfire line. I just dont know if it fully hit the market yet.

Are you looking for a magnified optic, or a red dot?

Magnified. I am leaning more towards AO. The main purpose for this gun is only shooting 25 yrds. I belong to a game and fish club and once a month they have a .22 shoot. They shoot at 25 yrds at a page full of various small targets. There is a guy with a Cooper built 10.22, probably about a $2k gun that dominates every week. So dad has bought a 541T and I purchased this, just to hopefully give him a little bit of competition without spending an arm and leg.

I would recommend a lot of ammo testing. The Wolf you mentioned earlier is great, Lapua, Eley, and certain Federal stuff is good too (711b). The Mueller scopes seem to be popular for rimfire's. Check out RimfireCentral.com, that is a great website for all things rimfire.

For good plinking ammo, try Blazer, it is very accurate for the money, 15-20$ a brick, but has occasional flier's. But it still shoots better than a lot of "match" ammo that I've tried. It isn't as good as Wolf, but much cheaper when your just screwing around.

Thanks guys. I love the cheap CCI Blazers. I actually got bored one night and weighed each individual bullet and weeded out the strays. When I did that they almost grouped as good as the Wolf.

Honestly, your optic is more than likely fine as long as your scope's adjustments will get your POA/POI spot on.

After that, you get into eye relief, followed by parallax adjustment and the focus knob.

You want the scope forward enough to make sure there isn't a ring or any spots of grey/black, just a crisp clear picture. If there's a ring, your scope is mounted too far to the rear. If you consistently have a crescent of grey/fuzz around the edge, your cheek weld is not sufficient, or you need to build up the stock. The crecent/fuzz is from your eye not being in the same position all the time. Pipe insulation and the stretch athletic wrap that sticks to itself is awesome for building up your stock for a good cheek weld, and it will not mark or modify the rifle in any way.

You'll have the scope in a different position if you're shooting prone vs. bench. Most people do not get a proper cheek weld or turkey neck on scoped rimfires due to really short recievers and the eye relief of the scope. This make shooting well neigh impossible.

Get your focus and parallax adjustments set up so your cross hairs and the image are both really, really crisp. Make sure to focus your eye on the reticule however, not the target.

After that, honestly it's all up to you and it will have a lot less to do with the ammo than what you think. This weekend I shot a lot of sub2MOA groups at 25m with my Ruger 10/22 using tech sights, and a USGI sling for support while rolling around in the mud and shooting in the rain. It didn't matter what ammo I was using for the most part, it pretty much all grouped well (from Remington Golden Bullets to Federal Bulk to Winchester Bulk to whatever else I had)

Darn near any rifle out there will outshoot the shooter, so just apply the good fundamentals of shooting and whoop his butt.

Or let me know when/where the match is, and if it's open to the public. I like shooting matches if I don't have to work. I'll bring my base model, bolt action Savage rifle.

I have the 3-9 on my Mark II and it is awesome. I can shoot the tits off a flea @ 50-100 yds. They come with calibrated elevation caps for 40gr ect... just for 22lr.

This would be a great scope for anyone looking for a tactical centerfire scope.

PST 6-24x would make a good budget one :tongue2: .. That is what will be sitting nicely on my 300wm build once i can bring my self to drop $1000 on the AICS stock.

I like the 6-24 pst with mil/mil/ffp, but at $950, its not really a budget scope. The scope I posted is second focal plane, but its mildots are set for 15x, the 6-24 pst that is sfp has its mildots set for 12x, and is $750. I will probably end up w/a 6-24 pst mil/mil/ffp for my 300 wsm.
