We just bought a 02 mountaineer and the timing chain guides in front are really noisey . Found out its a big pain in the butt to fix. I don't have the money to fix it. Somebody told me to just pull the front of the motor and replace the front guides and be done. Then someone else says to lock the cams in place before touching anything. Anyone wanna earn some money???

Wow,what a pain in the ass that is. It has 6 timing chains with two of them in the back of the engine. The 4 up front are horrible to get to and a huge pain in the ass. Talk to thecollector on here. he has worked on more of them than I have.

Yup those SUCK! I did a lot of those when I worked at the dealer. There are several special tools. You really need to know what you are doing on this job. I don't work on them anymore.

yup if you dont lock the cams you'll have to have them degreed witch is about 100$ a hour :( but any mod motor cam has to be degreed if the cams are replaced or not locked before you release the tension on the tensioners

You will need about $700 in special tools, an otc master ohc tool set and a roller follower remover. If the rear guide is broken( which it probably is) the transmission has to be pulled- the rear guide has a retaining bolt under the bellhousing. The cam sprockets have no key ways and the cams have no hexs on the bodys. The cams have eccentric flat slots that engage the special tool and hold everything in place to be torqued. Hardware retaining the primary cassette to the idler shaft and both cam sprocket bolts MUST BE REPLACED.
These trucks ussually get waffled due to the transmissions also being garbage, and the diffs have leakage/ring-pinion failures. If the cel is on and it has gear 2 or gear 5 ratio codes cut your losses and move on. Used value on these are very low because of all of these problems.
Chains alone are 20 hours labor. Parts are about 650ish. Figure 2300 as a cash deal. Let me know if you are interested.

Just offering a solution for his problem, 2300 buys a lot things timing chains in a late model explorer is one of them.

If this is motor and labor you should take it. I have a hard time finding K code flex fuel motors that are worth installing for that price, let alone labor and parts. I have only found one good used 4.0 and it was only 400 under a reman.

I got a mechanic friend who will do the chains for $750. The chain kit is like $100 on eBay. So I might do that. Idk the wife is bugging me to get it fixed. Lol

So why are there 6 timing chains? This is a 4.6L 2V engine we are tlaking about? Or a 6 cylinder?

its a v-6 found in rangers explorers and even mustangs. Their are 4 chains, one for the balance shaft and one for the primary cassette then from the idler shaft one runs to the cam on the front side of the motor at the drivers side cylinder head then another at the rear of the motor on the passengers side head to its cam. The reason for horrid design is reduced tooling costs, the motor uses the same cylinder head casting for the right and left banks- just has some carefully placed freeze plugs and different cams for either side.
These are garbage engines, one of fords largest blunders in reputation and reliability.
