Considering pretty much every control arm you buy states it fits 79-98 (ALL) and that the late 70's early 80's had the 7.5 and mid 80's to 98 had the 8.8 I figured the mounting points would be the same. Apparently that is not the case as I found out tonight as the mounting point on the rear end is way off.
I tried moving the rear all around jacking up one side, jacking the middle and could never get them to work.

Was my assumption wrong that they are the same? Or am I just doing something wrong with the install??

They are the same, I pulled a 7.5 and put a new 8.8 under mine with new controls arms. It's just a pain in the ass. I would put them on the housing first, then you can flex the rubber upper bushing of the housing and then mount it in the car.

I figured as much. It's just a pain moving the rear around by yourself and trying to position the arm all at the same time.

I found an 8.8 with posi and 3.73s locally, so I am picking it up Sunday. Planned on just waiting until the 7.5 went kaboom, but I figure I will have pretty much everything off anyway, what's the point of doing it again?
Plus I will have a posi unit and better gearing. Pretty good price to.

Rotate the rear end upwards. Like stated above its easier to mount on axle first.

Yeah I always hate monkeying with a rearend by myself. Then again, sometimes having a friend help is counter productive too because both of you think you know which way it "needs" to go. Good luck with it.

Yeah, it's a huge PITA. I wrestled with my swap for about a day, and clean up that cancer under there before you bolt the new rear in it!

I was looking at that while I was under there.
Figured pull the whole rear end and clean up the rust then coat it for protection.

Picking up an 8.8 with 3.73s and posi tomorrow.
