With the weather getting nicer around here... and my growing disgust for seeing this car sit.. like it has the past 6 years, I got my butt in gear and have been doin work on my '88 hatchback!
Some people know this as my "roof car".... I replaced the roof skin on this car a few years ago, and got rid of the dealer installed sunroof.
Here it is shortly after I got it
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m135/stangman_77/1988%20mustang/88inyard.jpg
Short backstory... Car was owned by a local kid, he wrecked it by putting it into a ditch, they left it sit, he moved out, Then his dad was moving to Texas, and wanted to sell it. My friend and fellow 'banger, stangman_5 bought it, and we both were fixing it up to be his daily driver back in like, '05-'06, and he couldnt get a title, long story short, I he sold it to me, and I got a title legally. Front sheetmetal under the hood was bashed up pretty good, and the body shop did it NO favors when they straightened the rails. So, I cut them out. Core support was also damaged and twisted, so that got cut out. I put a roof on it, and I am also doing a new cowl on it as well.
So here is what I got myself in to...
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m135/stangman_77/1988%20mustang/DSC03149.jpg
My frame rails are tweaked just ever soo slightly from the wreck, so a washer on top of the k-member over each hole got my K-member about as level as it's going to get.

Test-fitting the OEM ford NEW inner fender
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m135/stangman_77/1988%20mustang/DSC03151.jpg
I got ancy and wanted to put the rear end in it temporarily, all was going well until my rear upper control arms wouldnt fit w/ the aluminum bushings that come w/ the UPR double adjustables... have to shave em down, then they'll go right in... but I test fitted my 17x10.5" bullitts.... I must say... I like, I like a lot...

Cool project!
On the rear upper control arm see if you can separate the "ear" before you shave the spacers...it was probably just over tightened last time and should go in with a little help (ie BFH) lol

So what you guys are saying is to beat the mounts outward?
Yeah. You will most likely have to grab a socket or something to fit in the gap and use a pry bar to separate it. If that doesnt work find something else that will fit with a little more persuasion lol and beat it in there w a BFH. Should do the trick!
Stangman
06-03-2012, 11:06 PM
I pried a little with a prybar, but then took a dremel and cleaned up the burs where the old sleeve had indented the metal. That did the trick.
Now I just need some stock fox C/C plates!

I found some washers and put them under the castle nut for the ball joint, looks pretty sweet with Bullitts front and rear!

They're a lot more expensive. Plus, I am not 100% sure which direction I am going on a drivetrain.
In other new...
IT ROLLS!!!! After almost SIX years of tearing it apart, putting it off, getting sidetracked, getting sick and tired of it, and almost scrapping it.... it freaking rolls!!!!!!

Got a little done over the weekend, thanks to my buddy Chris.... we did some organization and got more thingss put in storage, clearing out more room inside the car and garage. Rolled the car outside into the daylight for the first time!! Which, the last time I rolled a fox shell outside, was to scrap it! and that was in '05!!
So, then we did a 3 point turn and backed it into the garage. On Sunday we started grinding and cleaning up the areas where the new sheetmetal will be welded. Progress is good!!!!

Been a looooong time since I updated this thread. Been in to other things, continuous back problems, and just plain ole being broke. But here are some pics from the last year, and some of this past winter.

I then needed to get my anti-roll bar installed. It's a UPR, so say what you will, but it was priced right. And I can sort of see why. It needed quarter inch plates welded to each side of the frame rail in order to get it to sit in the right place.
So I welded those in...

Thanks. It's not looking like its going to be.. atleast money-wise, but I shouldnt need to buy anything big for this car for a while besides some steel to make my full length subframe connectors.

Tinkered with it a little over the weekend. Took Thursday/Friday off and enjoyed a busy but extended weekend.
Welded the rest of my torque box reinforcement plates in. And let me tell you, those pieces of steel must be chinese.. because my welder did NOT like them at all. I even ground them down pretty darn good too.

I reinstalled all the torque box reinforcement hardware with loctite and cranked em down.
Now I just need to clean up my 8.8, bend and install new brake lines for it, and paint it, and then I can throw it in the car with my drag springs. and the rear is DONE.

Hardware store satin black rustproofing paint. it's pretty evil stuff. kills paint brushes to where you cant use em again. Needs 2 or 3 coats to really look good, or apply with a roller.

Got some more work done to my pile over the past few weeks. It's getting close to being off the rotisserie permanently! :cool2:
Welded a new patch on the bottom of the floor on the drivers side. I had patched it many years ago when I first got the car, from the top side, because I didnt have a rotisserie, or large jack stands, and did a pretty piss-poor job, so this time I patched it from underneath with thicker steel, and did a better job. Gap towards the pinch weld will be filled before the car hits the road, I just couldnt weld in there.

Had to buy a few nuts and setscrews for the steering shaft, and ordered some manual steering rack bellows from a '78 Pinto for my Flaming River rack since mine were dry-rotted beyond usability.

Thanks a lot guys!
Tonight i welded my anti roll bar tabs to the axle. That kinda sucked doing it under the car. Had a spark go down the back of my pants... That made me jump and hit my head. so I hurt on both ends.
Also had to reassemble the axle. I had taken the passenger axle shaft out to make sure they were the right length, and hey were, so i thru it all back together, found out my differential bearing retainer was flipped so I flipped it back the correct way and torqued it down. Threw the diff cover back on and done.
I also had to rotate my drivers side spring. The end of the coil was facing the outside of the car when they should face the inside. Wrestled with that for about an hour with only one good floor jack it made it fun. But it also got done.

Did some work to Frankenstein this weekend!
Went over to a friends house in Bethel to get some junk brake rotors so I could bolt my wheels on... Also installed the drivers side coil spring. That was fun.

Dad noticed the garage was starting to smell, and found that we had mold growing under the linoleum flooring he layed down 10 years ago. So this was another reason the car had to move.
Cleaned everything up, killed the mold, and stuck it back in the garage.

Since it's back on the ground I started to get back to work on other parts of the car. I needed to replace the cowl on this car. When my friend owned it he drove it w/o the front clip on it and the nose still bent up, and the hood didnt latch..... so needless to say it flew up. I had already replaced the roof because of the non factory sunroof AND the damage from the hood.
I had repaired it a few times. Once back in the day with a slide hammer and screws, covering it with bondo. Then a 2nd time when that repair failed, and I used a friend's welder after pulling it a little straighter. That repair still held up good... but it wasnt *perfect* like an undamaged cowl.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m135/stangman_77/1988%20mustang/20140913_142026_zpskf4cepu5.jpg (http://s103.photobucket.com/user/stangman_77/media/1988%20mustang/20140913_142026_zpskf4cepu5.jpg.html)
So I used my cutoff wheel and ran it all along the backside, and then down each end, and grabbed it and yanked.

Next is cut out more of the bulk of the front of it, and then drill out the spot welds along what remains and prep it for the new one.

I finally got the bug again to work on this thing. (Seems to only happen about a month out of the year according to the date of my last post!) I've actually been hitting my Lincoln hard this year pushing to get it done mechanically.
Anyway a few things have changed since the last time anyone has seen this thing. I bought some strange struts at the last fall cruise in, and then bought some coil over kits and springs from summit racing. So now the front end is on coilovers. It finally has suspension travel!! I also bought some sn95 spares from the junkyard to roll it on the front because I needed the two Bullitt wheels for my Lincoln.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m135/stangman_77/1988%20mustang/FB_IMG_1439515263674_zpsmjlc9vez.jpg (http://s103.photobucket.com/user/stangman_77/media/1988%20mustang/FB_IMG_1439515263674_zpsmjlc9vez.jpg.html)
I cut the remaining sections of the cowl off and started cleaning up the body and the new cowl for test fit. Works out pretty well really.

So then since fitment was good I painted the underside with a rust preventing black paint
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m135/stangman_77/1988%20mustang/20150817_154433_zpsniixsgjz.jpg (http://s103.photobucket.com/user/stangman_77/media/1988%20mustang/20150817_154433_zpsniixsgjz.jpg.html)

Clamped it all together one last time, after I painted the mating surfaces with a zinc enriched weld thru primer.

Thats true! But forum surfing is hard on a cell phone. And I don't spend much time in front of a computer when I'm at home. Only when I'm at work. Which when I'm at work I'm usually too slammed to do anything.
I'm hoping I can con a friend into doing the grinding for me on that cowl. I HATE grinding.
