Picked up a used rear end and was told that it has 3.73s.
Getting ready to pull the cover and replace the girdle. Is there an easy way to ID what gear set without removing it???

Thanks

3.73 should be stamped on the ring gear diameter and the pinion hub if i rember correctly. Or you can spin the pinion and count revolutions per one ring gear revolution. (Should go aroud 3 and 3/4 times)

What Dave said. Mark a reference point on the pinion gear, and another on one of the axle hubs. Count the total rotations of the pinion gear needed to make the axle hub complete one complete rotation. Should be 3.73 turns.

You can do it with the cover and wheels on also. Jack the rear up, mark the driveshaft and count how many times it rotates while the wheel does 1 revolution. Busted a guy tying to lie to me about the gear in the car he was trying to sell me! I just wish there was a trick to bust the guys with "ported and polished" or "bored out" parts.

With the cover off all you need to do is count the number of teeth on the ring gear and on the pinion gear. Take those two numbers and divide them.
