Here is the skinny, I can charge the battery and the car will start. Let it set and run with lights tach and radio on and the battery will die. I have used a multi meter and with the car running I get between 13.5 to 14.5 volts. Had the battery checked at auto zone and it passed. Any ideals? Could the alt still be bad but show a good charge?

Check the battery your self. Keep your self from the hassle of the people at Autozone. They do what the stupid ass machine tells them to do.

With your volt meter, read its static charge after about an hour of sitting with nothing on,and report back.

With the car running, its about the right voltage. Since that is good and the alternator is charging you have to check static voltage on the battery. Good battery voltage should be around 12.7v with no load.

If its around 9 volts, you are missing a plate in the battery and it wont be able to hold a charge. If it takes a charge and start's but dies quickly and wont "hold" a charge,it sounds like you have sulfated plates in the battery. Thats when the acid soaks into the lead of the battery and it no longer produces an electric charge. Either that or the lead has gone to shit and it just wont produce electricity.

Do as Face stated. If that does not resolve it...

Does this year of mustang have the voltage regulator separate from the alternator like on the 84's? If so that unit could have failed and may not be maintaining a charge on the battery. The car will run as long as the battery has voltage. Once drained it croaks. I had this issue on an 1984 Ford. Replaced the volt regulator and she was good again.

found the issue, the alt works great when the car is cold warm it warms up it stops charging. Lucky the alt has a warranty so I will send it back. It is a one wire with built in reg.

I wasn't sure what year they changed that, but was thinking it may have happened pre88-post84. Glad you found the problem.

Keep on them, they will "forget" that it is there for repair and hang onto it for awhile. They are good at that.lol.
