I posted this a while back asking your guys opinions on a tapping that my car had. When you first start it for about 5 min it taps really loud like a fast paced tap then it just goes away and motor is quiet its done it since i got it about a year ago since then I've replaced rod and main bearings oil pump and passenger side lifters and still taps it has got a but louder since when i first got it but that's it any ideas?

I'm no mechanic, but I would almost put money on it.

Piston rocking in the bore? Does it do it in every startup, or just cold starts?

For one thing why would u only change half of the lifters when they are notorious for going bad alot of people even have trouble with new ones so that could be part of the problem. Also timing chains and wrist pin wear as well

Not a wrist pin checked them i knew the lash adjusters were notorious for going out but since I'm not made of money and the fact that their 300 a side didn't sit well.

I know they are expensive so are the timing chains and tensioners and guides, I would think the chains would make noise all the time because the tensioners lock themselves out so if there were any slop in the chain it would slap all the time, unless the tensioner is failing

I replaced the 2 big chain tensioners cause they looked old and everything else looked new

I believe it's time for a full on rebuild if it is piston rock and it's getting louder

Would the piston rock really hold up for a year though even with me not taking it easy on it...it hasn't got considerably louder just a little bit

Did you replace the tensioners with OEM Ford units, how about the lifters?

Tensioners i did oem lifters were Trickflow

Yep. It's just the bore is wore slightly too big. When it gets warm the bore and piston expand and they comes back into spec.

Is it something i should be concerned about or is it fine if i don't mind the noise?

FYI...you can get a colette set of rebuilt OEM lash adjusters from Modular Head Shop for $169.

I wouldn't beat on it til it's up to temp, but IMO it's nothing major of it clears up when warm.

If the piston is beating off the cylinder wall and it is pretty loud then I would say its major because it is scuffing the cylinder wall which means the rings won't seal right causing a loss in compression, it's ok to have a little piston slap on startup but if it is getting worse it's not good

Slap on the VORTECH and see what happens.....I'm sure it will let you know what needs replaced!! Best of luck with it:bigthumb

Also i forgot to mention that when it gets around 2500rpm it lightly rattles

Could be lash adjusters or a bearing issue

I replaced the passenger side lash adjusters i thought that's where it was coming from...in these aluminum motors its a real pain to find the location lol

Sounds in a motor can be tricky anyway

Get a stethoscope. Might let you get better idea of where it is coming from

Had a shop look at it and they said sounded like valvetrain noise to them

Pull the valve covers and replace all the lash adjusters, problem solved

You can't really tell only that its coming from the back of the motor
