I know its not a Mustang, but it is a Ford! I have had this pick up for a while and I am finally wanting to see it turn into something! Figured Id do a budget built old rat rod just to drive and enjoy.
Its gonna be pretty simple and I want to spend the least amount as possible and do most of the work myself. Will just be using a 302 and a C4. Im going to try the chop and channel myself with some help from friends! Also I want to Z the frame front and rear for the "In the weeds look"!
Here is what I am starting with!

Mocked up some more parts today to see what I want to do. Just drug more parts out to see what all I might need! I definitely want to chop atleast 3 inches off the top and set it down about 4 inches over the frame.

Its got a ways to go but it is solid as hell and has the original wood inside. It may come up for sale soon but Im sure it wont be cheap. Typical 32 Ford!!!

Built the frame myself. 2x3 box steel with a cut and set kick in the front and a 6" kick in the rear.

I used model A specs and added 3" to the wheel base so i didn't have to cut the firewall.

I just got rid of a rusty 2 door sedan for $300! It was good rat rod material but just the body. They can be found pretty cheap.

I havent messed with it much but I did pick up a 460 from orangedemon331 (Ray). It might just make its way in it! Will be a little nose heavy and make more power than needed but it should be fun!

Well, I am finally getting this project back up and going. Dropped the cab, bed, and SBF/C4 off at Cornfield Customs yesterday. He is building a custom chassis, chopping the top, and channeling the cab and bed. He does some real nice work and is a super good dude. Cant wait to see how this turns out! As I get pictures from him, Ill post them up.

draggin50
03-15-2015, 07:00 PM
Yeah not quite the budget any more!! The pricing isn't bad though for what he is doing. Right now he will be building the frame, setting the cab and bed on, mocking up motor and tranny, installing a 9 inch and all the front suspension. I'll probably have him chop the top and fill the roof too.
draggin50
03-15-2015, 09:39 PM
He has made a lot of progress! Frame is coming together nicely, and the front suspension is mocked up. He threw a set of his wheels on it to see how it looks.

Not sure what happened to my pictures... Ill add them back up.
Jesse he is building the frame and getting it rolling. Also he will be putting the cab and bed on, doing all the floor work, chopping the top and filling it. I don't have the 40 anymore. I took it to the woman a while back but she wants to sell it. Asking an arm and a leg in my opinion. So it will probably never sell.

Ill probably build a low compression 302 for a 6-71 blower. Or it would be nice too!
That's going to be Cool Brian ...
Are the front wheels yours ???
They are BADASS !!!
No those are his wheels. Ill run stock steel wheels on mine.
What's the story with this ???
That's Cool !!!
She wants to sell it but she is asking a lot for it. They can be found for around 8500 running and driving and in decent shape.

Finally picked up the A as a rolling chassis yesterday. I still have a long ways to go though. Next order is get the motor and tranny back out and built. I may go with another stock 302 and a good sounding cam. The C4 will get rebuilt and just a small stall converter. Then it will go back to Cornfield to get the cab chopped and channeled and the bed set in place. That will be spring time when money permits. It sits low and should look awesome when its done!

Making a little progress. Started pulling some pieces off and getting them powder coated. I have a local Amish trailer factory that my buddy works at that is hooking me up with coating. The ladder bars was rough since they are 70 or so year old wish bones that was used.
Also pulled the motor out of the 94 to use in this. Its a stock bottom end with GT40X heads, 1.7 roller rockers, and Wolverine cam. Gonna clean it up, and use it. I think it made 270ish to the wheels with the AOD so it should pull it pretty good. It will have a Performer RPM air gap intake and 650 Holley.

Man that takes patience. Something I have little of. I want it done NOW! Not 3 years from now. I see these huge projects on here and think to myself, "dag how could a guy stay motivated to complete something that takes this long?" I'd be doing well to buy a ready roller, build an engine, and drop it in before losing interest. Much credit to you and others like Jess (stangman) who can stay motivated to see big projects like this through to completion.

Ive been working on this one a lot here lately. Got some of the front suspension pieces powder coated and back on. Still need to do the wishbones and front axle. Also put the motor and tranny back in.
Set the bed on after removing all the 85 year old wood. Still not channeled in this picture. Have to cut out the center frames and edges to make it clear the frame.

Cut out the subframe to start channeling the cab. What a bitch... But its all cut out and setting on the frame. Still not all the way done here.

Installed the center section so I could measure for a drive shaft. I was just going to use the aluminum driveshaft from the yellow car and have it cut down but Id rather just use a stock steel drive shaft since its smaller diameter. Space is going to be limited...
I ordered some header flanges and 1 5/8 tubing so I can make a set of headers. Ill have a couple different sets I can swap back and forth depending on how I feel! These will just be 15 inch long primary tubes coming straight off the flanges. Next set will be the Lakester style with 3 1/2 inch megaphones and turn outs. Ill post up pictures when I get them done.

Rather than watching football and being pissed off all weekend because the Bengals lost, I stayed in the garage as much as I could and worked on the Model A. It makes me happy knowing that I actually made something for it. I have the knowledge and most off the tools but sometimes I lack the confidence. And Im a tight ass so I hate to pay for metal and screw it up!!
Well anyways, I ordered a set of Patriot header flanges and some 1 5/8" pipe. I cut the 5ft. section into 4 pieces of 15 inches. Smashed the end of the tubes in the vise to fit the 1 3/4 inch holes in the flange. Got the tube to fit and welded it on the inside of the flange. Im going to have my buddy finish welding them on the outside so they don't look like crap!!! Tonight I took a piece of 1 3/4 tubing and made a template for how I wanted the taper done. Laid it all out, marked it, and cut close to the lines with a cutoff wheel. Then I cleaned it all up with a disc. I think they turned out pretty good for my first time. I know its nothing like what Rob Lewis or any other fab shop would do, but I did something for it that Im pleased with. Now to start on the drivers side!!

Thanks Shayne!
Chris Im still looking for some of the old finned ones. If I don't find any soon, Ill get with ya. I have a set of the finned Ford Racing ones but I don't want to use them either if I don't have to.

Haha yeah it does! I have a black one that I am cutting down about 3 or 4 inches to make work. It looks goofy as hell sitting on there now.

Picked up a few more parts! Thanks Mike!
650 double pumper, March pulleys, March alternator bracket, 1 wire alternator, distributor, and balancer. Also got some Mach 1 rear drum brakes but they are for the small ford ends. Going to see what I can do to make them work if possible.
Timing cover is painted and ready to go on. Have to pick up a timing cover gasket, 1 piece oil pan gasket and a water pump. Then I can finish the motor up.
Still haven't decided on valve covers. Im still leaning towards the finned aluminum ones or the Edelbrock finned valve covers. Ill decide later I guess! I have a few sets hanging around but they don't really fit the part.

I hope this one is the last for a while but I doubt it will be!!
I'd like to find an "A" Coupe someday. And build another turbo foxbody. But right now, I need to focus on this one and the Cobra. Im sure the wife has had about enough of the "I need car money"!!

Got the timing cover removed and old gasket cleaned off. I have to pick up the timing cover gasket set, 1 piece oil pan gasket and water pump tomorrow. Hope to get those parts and put it all back together soon. Get the balancer and pulleys on along with the alternator.

Got my gaskets and water pump. Removed the pan, replaced the gasket, installed the timing cover, balancer, water pump, pulley's and alternator. Looking like a complete motor again! I have to pick up all new bolts to get rid of the crusty old ones that stick out like a dick on a fish.

I still need to get a stock dipstick and tube and belt.
I should be able to fire it up once I get an MSD box. Once this is all done, Ill pull the tranny back out and get it rebuilt along with a new converter.
