View Full Version : I snuck into the 12.40's

For a quick flashback in November 2010 the car went a best of 12.64 @105.58 with the complete stock untouched HCI, then over the winter after Dayton Performance did the 5-angle valve job, 1.7 rockers and valve spring kit it went a best of 12.54 and a best mph of 108.31.

Before I go any further the slicks I've been running for the last 5 years were as of last week 21 years old. I gave the M/T tech the manufacturers code on the sidewall and he said "Those slicks are ancient", so now of course I have new slicks.

I had to play with tire pressure and strut settings as the track came around ie: the officials sprayed VHT from the 60' to the 330'. I went 12.48 @ 107.51 and backed it up with a 12.50 @ 107.16 with back to back 1.58 60' times I'm pretty stoked as it's picked up .16 since I've had this combo and I think it's capable of dipping into the 12.3xx range as it sits.

I just have to get more seat time as I only made 12 passes all year, a far cry from many many years ago in which I used to make hundreds and hundreds of passes a year. It just gets me motivated for the season opener which is only 3 months away!

Peace :cool2:

Hey did you ever figure out what the noise in the rear was? When we were at edgewater a while back Thanks Jesse, yeah the wheel stud had backed out and damaged the bolts and springs on the brakes. We didn't noticed it when we took the drum off but it's all good now.

A small correction, in your sig!

James, you're one of the few that truely inspire me. To do what you have done, with as little as you have, is very impressive. In a time where I could go buy a daily driver capable of those times, it makes me want to get back to work on my car.

Congrats, you deserve it!

Thanks Jeff I really appreciate it man! I actually ran my personal best on the new pair of slicks I got....I was real leary of running the "old" slicks another day!

Ever since I've owned this car the primary goal was to always maximize the factory parts while avoiding the aftermarket (which is hard at times)......get your car on the road it'll be cool to see it at the track again. :bigthumb

Thanks for the props I appreciate it!, here is my suspension set up:

1. 3.73 gear

2. Flaming River manual rack

3. UPR K-member kit with coilovers/A-arms and 130lb springs

4. Strange 10-way adjustable struts

5. No front sway bar

6. Lakewood lift bars

7. Ground Pounder double adjustable uppers they are out of business now but basically the same as HPM mega byte jrs

8. Koni adjustable rear shocks

9. Weld 3.5" wheels with skinnies and Weld 8" rear wheels with 26/8.5/15 Mickey Thompson ET drags

10. HPM subframe connectors

11. Moser spool, 33 spline gun drilled axles with lightening holes in the
flanges

Good luck on your quest for the 12's with the stock HCI, it's doable it just takes some degree of determination. As long as you have good weather, can hook, and if it's a stick good clean shifts then you should realize your goals.

Thanks for the info!

We will see what I can do on a good tire without the sway bar then add more later. I want to see how the car progresses with each change to suspension.

We will see what I can do on a good tire without the sway bar then add more later. I want to see how the car progresses with each change to suspension. No problem I hope it's of some use to you. You are taking the route most people don't ie: focusing on the suspension and maximizing it.
I think you'll be happy with your efforts if you stick with it, when I started my run at the 12's years ago I went from 13.48 to 12.64 (.84 or almost a full second) just concentrating on suspension and related items over a 3 year period before making any additional power.

No problem, yeah same here. Practice is the key, it's cool when you take what you learned about what your car likes and from watching your fellow racers and then reaching your goal......it's definitely a blast!
