On a complete 5.4 sohc drivetrain from a expo...... what would be involved in making it a DOHC? Any rare / stupid expense parts needed to do so? I want a coyote for my 68 but it is not in the cards till school is done. So a Dohc 5.4 would be cool ... maybe a junkyard TT kit too :)

Completely rebuilding it for one. Simply swapping the heads, which could be done would result in a very low compression ratio. Then there is the intake. You would either need one from an Aussie car or a Sullivan which is no longer being made.

I doubt a 5.4 DOHC fit between a 68s engine compartment. a 4.6 DOHC is a stretch and they are not as wide as a 5.4 SOHC let alone a DOHC. You would probably need the intake adapter plate so you could use the 96-01 Cobra intake. A new hood possibly these things are tall. Navigator heads and then throw cobra cams at it. Painless wiring kit... Thats just a few i could think of. Others will know more then me. I want a 5.4 DOHC in my Mustang and its an 02 GT and i have read its a grizzly bear and hurts the bank account to do it. Id say if you want a modern engine in it buy a PI 4.6 or get a 97-98 Mark 8 engine from the junk yard.

Both of them intakes are stupid expensive too!

My towers are mostly gone. I thought i could use a navigator intake? I thought i heard they were dohc

Forget that! Put a blower on it! No weird intake to worry about!

Plus id like to keep the hood stock since they don't make cool hoods for a 68 cougar

You could, but the navi intake is designed for tq production, is very tall and damn ugly.

You're much better off buying a navigator engine (there's one for sale on this site) and rebuilding it. You can use a Mach or C head cobra intake manifold with adapters or the new Boss intake as it can be made to work on the 5.4 with Navi heads. A benefit of the Boss intake is that it'll make better power than all other options from idle to 7000 and it's inexpensive.

What's an "expo"?

Expedition I would presume

After some research it looks like this is not a good idea. Back to hunting a 4.6 4v
