View Full Version : Addiction sets in!

I recently picked up an 86 GT to kind of beat on and have fun in but it didnt last long! My oldest boy will be 15 in may and the Mustang addiction has been with him for a while due to me owning them. Well he has called dibs on this one! Its a pretty clean car other than the hatch is shot, tail lights cracked, and a busted steering column.
The car has under drive pulleys, electric fan, Southside lowers, solid uppers, Hurst shifter, NOS kit, BBK shorty headers and H pipe, pony wheels and a gear. I traded the nitrous kit off already being that he wont need it.
Shayne hooked us up with the steering column, he traded a set of door panels for lx tail lights, and found a hatch on CL! So I put him to work!
When I brought it home.

Swapped to the pony wheels.

Im not sure what gear it has in it now but when you turn real tight it jerks real bad and makes a nasty noise. I havent made room in the garage for it yet to pull apart.

Also pulled the cover off the old rear end to see what was broke, and its fine!!! Just has a mini spool in it with a 3.73 gear. Also has adjustable uppers and Southside lowers. Will get some pics up soon.

We have been making progress but I haven't kept up on here. We bought the 91 GT from KB1 on here and stripped it and kept a few things. We are going to convert it to Mass Air and swap in the motor out of it. We pulled the motor apart and it had 1 bent push rod and the cam had 1 lobe gone. F cam will be going in tomorrow...
We swapped the rear end out for one I bought used and it made more noise than the one it had in it, so we will be using the one out of the 91 as well. It has a 3.90 gear in it.
Got the 4 inch HO Fibertrends hood on. Looks a little better! Also put Weld Draglites all the way around. This winter didn't give much time to work on it so we are getting back at it now.
He still isn't 16 but he is working his ass off on it. Maybe I can get Plated to help out on the paint!

Yeah the blue car was shot! It didn't look to bad until you pulled off the ground effects. We stripped it, sold most of the parts, and are gonna use the rest on the 86. The 86 is solid and has perfect frame rails and is not rusted out any.

As far as his motor, we threw an F cam in it, got it all painted, new gaskets on and is up to putting the lifters in and intake on. I have a set of valve covers for him too that he don't know about yet! Hope to have the motor swapped out here in the next few weeks and get the mass air conversion done. It should run pretty good for a 16 year olds first car!

Been working on this one a lot here lately. We put in a new clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing. Installed the motor, and started to button it up. He painted the engine bay while I was at work one day so it looks a lot better!
Basically its a stock 91 302 with F cam, Explorer upper and lower and a 70mm throttle body. Stock T5 with a Hurst shifter, 8.8 with a 3.90 gear. It has BBK shorty headers, x-pipe and Flowmasters with new polished tailpipes.
Next thing to go is get it painted! I need a good 86 GT nose, Cobra wing, and a drivers side door.

Starting to make a little bit of progress on the boys car.
Picked up a set of Eibach Pro springs for him for Christmas from Walter. Got those in and he decided to steal my brakes from the 91. Got new rotors, pads, spindles, and repacked the bearings. Putting the spindles on, we ran into a problem due to the struts still having the wider spacing from the 4 cylinder (86 and older) spindles. Bought a set of spacers from Racecraft and worked like a charm!
Also pulled out the factory quarter glass to swap in the 87-93 glass.
Car is coming along well. Now to install the intake and wire up the mass air conversion harness. Its almost ready to run!

Put the new larger brakes on and now we have an issue with the tabs on the outer brake pads hitting the inside of the wheel. They are 1.75" bs Draglites. Never ran into an issue like this before. It ended up braking one tab off. I smashed the others with a hammer and they fit better now. Its an older set of draglites so they may be made different.
Put the intake on tonight and started wiring everything up. Still have the mass air conversion to do.

That was going to be my plans with the 85. But as I watch it, I can't compete with some of those guys and I'd just be a filler. Plus the wife and kids aren't much into sitting on hot as bleachers all day getting sun burnt! So I sold everything, bought the New Cobra and we can go cruising or to the track. Best of both worlds!

It fired right up first crank so I must've done something right! Made his night! Now he'll never get to sleep and probably be late for school! I keep hearing the video playing from down stairs!

I'd just end up building me another one if I had your parts!
I need the brake hose brackets for the front lines that bolts to the frame rail. Also he needs some caster/camber plates.

Cool let me know. His strut is hitting the brake line bracket and the tops of the wheels are leaning out. I just put the eibach pro springs in it and it sets a lot lower now.

We've been making a little bit of progress with this one.
He has been working some and saved a few dollars back and bought all his rear brake parts. It has new shoe's, wheel cylinders, hardware, and brake hose. Now to bleed the brakes maybe this weekend.
Also bought him a set of UPR caster/camber plates for his birthday. Got them installed and back on the ground with the Eibach lowering springs I bought from Walter. It sets low but looks good! Alignment is off real bad now so I tried to adjust the tow to get it close until we get it to an alignment shop but both tie rod ends are stuck all to hell! That will be our next hurdle to jump through.
Ill get some pictures once we dig it back out of the basement! He has took over the spot where my Model A was...

Well this has come along a ways since I last posted.
He went ahead and painted the top flat black just to cover the surface rust. He also tinted the tail lights.
Its in time and running so I figured Id take it for a ride today. Didn't do to bad. Feels like it has a vibration when the RPM's are above 4500 or so. Ill look into it more later. Did a few big burnouts in front of the neighbors. Alignment is close but it needs done right. Still have a lot to do! He will be 18 in May so then its on him!!
Here is a picture of how it sits today.

reminds me of my first car back in the day, 88 mustang. My 6 year old already claims my 86 swap project as "HIS" car. By his logic I have a truck, his mom has a car, so the third vehicle must be his.

We took the 86 to Kilkare tonight. Isaac made 2 passes. Went a 14.25@97 on his first pass, spinning bad through 1st and 2nd. His last pass was a 14.48@99 still spinning on the BFG Comp TA's.
I made 1 pass and went 14.16@99 with a 2.25 60ft. The rear end needs attention as shown by the one wheel peel!
He has a turbo motor lined up as soon as it comes out this fall. He is 18 now so its all on him!

That's cool for you guys to get out to the track together. My boy just turned 6 and is showing a little interest in my old F100. Maybe by the time he is old enough to drive we will have it cleaned up and laying rubber. I sure he thinks the world of you for everything you do with him. My dad and I never had the same interests, I liked power...he likes gas mileage lol!

Its good for him to have a hobby and it will keep him out of trouble hopefully. Glad to see how it runs though. I think the motor is just wore out. With some good tires I think it would go 13's easy.
Once fall comes, he has his eyes on a turbo motor that my buddy has so he is going to pick that up. He may pick up the turbo kit also.

Well this car is setting in the garage tore all apart! Its in a million pieces right now!
He picked up a UPR tubular K member and A arms, Flaming river manual rack, UPR coil overs and 5 lug new style front brakes.
For the back he picked up a rear end from Chris91.
He ended up with my motor from the old yellow car with the 1087 cam and GT40X heads and 1.7 rockers.

The motor is the one I had out of the 94 GT. Stock bottom end with 1087 cam, GT40X aluminum heads, and Cobra 1.7 rockers.
He is looking for a Systemax intake or TFS intake. Let me know if you have one. He has the Explorer intake and 70mm TB but don't really want to use it.
