View Full Version : 4 Eye redo

I decided that I was bored with my car the way it was so:

I have made the decision to swap in a 5.3 LS motor and go back to turbo. I'm picking up an 03 truck motor and I have another TH400 that I can build. I got a MP T76 from another member. I am undecided on how much other work I am going to be doing. Right mow the plan is to fill in all the holes in the engine bay, smooth the firewall and maybe even get rid of all the factory inner sheet metal and just do a tubular front end. I like the Holley fuel injection so I will be going with that for ignition. I have already pulled the old engine and all the front sheet metal. I also pulled the dash and will be rewiring everything. I need to get out the camera and take some pictures. More to come....

Just easier and cheaper to find. Cheaper being the key. I'd love to do an 05 5.3 aluminum block but hell I'll just add some boost to make up for the weight.

Nice build can't wait to see more pics love 4 eye cars and even though I'm a ford guy the LS engines are stout and can be built to make some wicked power.

MFIELD

Yeah you cant complain about how easy it is to make decent power safely with them.

MFIELD

Made a little progress, picked up my motor. I ended up with an 04 5.3. Got the trans core I had torn down to just the case. It really looks pretty good inside so a basic rebuild with good parts and it will be up and ready to go. Got it bolted up and set everything down in. Went pretty good.
http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww324/85gt4v/DFEA8989-422F-471C-A97A-4D694E59D628-16497-00000FA052DB16A2.jpg

Luckily I still had the transmission crossmember I made for a TH400 when I had the mod motor in there and it fits perfect for this set up. I started cutting up my old turbo kit to reuse the flanges and things like that.

I got the intercooler mocked up where it will be inside the dash. Just getting started with it.
http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww324/85gt4v/E548338E-FA04-432E-B349-0BD80F06988F-16497-00000FA0B3F12C57.jpg

I was planning on using engine plates to mount this but I am seeing issues with clearances with a few things. I am trying to do this on a small budget so I dont see a big dollar set of headers. We will see what happens.

MFIELD
01-03-2013, 10:51 PM
I was planning on using the the factory intake at first but the engine I got has the drive by wire throttle body that I wasnt planning on using. I will see if I can get an older one that will bolt up or I will have to change the whole thing.

MFIELD
01-04-2013, 08:32 PM
I've got a Master Power T-76 and I will be building my own kit for it. Thinking about running E85 but havent decided for sure on that yet. Going to leave the motor completely stock for now.

I've got some other neat fab ideas but havent started them yet.

Well I made some progress, at least I think. I decided to mount the engine with motor plates and I am going to add to my cage and tie the front in. I have a local shop making me a couple halos for the front frame rails and lower radiator support. After thats put in I will be adding upper bars that go through the firewall to the exsisting cage and tie them to the front halo and strut towers. Then I am going to make the upper tie bar but I am going to make it bolt in so it can be removed easy to work on everything.

http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww324/85gt4v/97f9b281922a9ad88037ea77bf584797.jpg

I'm also going to be reusing my Ford shorty headers for this build. Rixxx93gt is machining me flanges and a few other small parts for the engine.

The material was ordered today and is to be in on Wednesday. Hopefully he has time to bend them and I can get them by next weekend. If thats the case I will have in place by the end of next weekend. I spent a ton on time agonizing if I wanted to do it this way or not.

Made some progress, here is the front engine plate. I made a template of the front of the block and gave it to RIXXX93GT. He worked his magic on the computer and cnc'd me out a perfect piece the first time. It fits like a glove. He also made me some sweet adapters for the water inlets to run my electric pump remotely. This piece started out as just a blank solid plate.
http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww324/85gt4v/C71B1383-13C0-4DCC-B58A-CEC4E068E7A8-425-00000039B9C4B8E4.jpg

I also was able to pick up my tubing today. I got the frame rails trimmed back and capped. Then I fit the main halo and tacked it in place. Test fit the front end back on the car and it fits perfect in the front cover. Then I fit the lower halo for the radiator.
http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww324/85gt4v/26015CC5-1B94-44CC-9C82-0A792ABE1AD7-425-00000039A9A225E9.jpg

Tomorrow I will finish weld all this up and start on fitting the engine plate in the car and fabbing up mounts for the sides. I bought a mid plate but its not going to work for my car so I will have to be making my own of that to:(

If you look closely at the first picture you can see one of the header flanges Rick also made. Top notch stuff.

I don't get why everyone is jumping on the bandwagon with these stupid motors? I mean, they're the same technology is a production 302 block...

You can swap that TB for a cable driven truck TB. Not only is it more complicated, but it's more expensive as the HP EFI requires an add on to be able to use DBW.

DBW has it's place although I'm not typically a fan. The Holley system only requires an additional wiring harness to use this feature. The car is looking great Mike:bigthumb

Time for a little update. I was planning on using the new Holley high rise manifold but it is on back order and I decided not to wait any longer I went with a Vic Jr and elbow. This will easily fit under the hood. I was back and forth on the vic jr and the super victor but after looking at all the specs they were so close I went with the smaller. The biggest difference was the flange height and I can add my carb spacer as you see and that is basically a super victor now. Port sizes were almost identical.

I also got the turbo mount made up and have almost all the hotside made up, just waiting on the v bands to come in.

What are you using for ignition?

Copy that. Just make sure its not getting too heated, the balancers can fail with excessive heat and 8500 rpm.

Wow I guess it has been a while since i updated this thread. Some of the plans changed along the way as they always do. I decided the Holley EFI and all the supporting parts to go with it just wasnt in the budget right now. I went with an MSD ignition for The fire and I still had a carb and the carb hat from my old set up. As it sits now the car is ready to take to the track and start tuning. So here are some more current pictures.
http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww324/85gt4v/null_zps633ef151.jpg (http://s732.photobucket.com/user/85gt4v/media/null_zps633ef151.jpg.html)

I added two upper bars that tie the main cage to the front end then put the upper rails back on. It's all painted and ready to go. Cant wait for some better weather.

Thanks, I tried to use as much stuff that I already had. That also gave me more room in front of the engine not running the factory water pump.

Ultimately I will end up with the Holley like you have.

Dont think so Jim, pressure would raise like it should but a/f would go lean fast just after boost. I have a big canister type filter on it and checked it as I was putting everything together.

That's why I mentioned it. I ended up borrowing a bigger pump and filter setup for mine. Then decided to check my filter setup out. Swapped new elements in my housings and put my pump back on. It was fine. Hope its.something this simple.
