Im working on a 1988 notch that has been somewhat abused. When I look at the mess of wires under the hood, I keep thinking of ripping it all out and going carb. Then I think, I'll just rip out the old wiring and put in a painless wiring kit, but thats almost a grand.............FOR WIRES !!!! What to do  Can I eliminate some of the wiring for the emmissions crap ? I'd love to keep the fuel injection but this is a budget ride. What do ya'll think ?

What has been hacked on the factory harness? Where does your issue begin? I would definitely keep the fuel injection though

Keep the efi and do a wire tuck, mine is pretty clean after the wire tuck everything is hidden except the bundle under the pinch weld on the firewall

The problem with the wiring is the unknown. I'm going to have to go through the entire wiring harness just to make sure the dumbasses before me didn't mess it up. I pulled the stereo and whoever put the stereo in just twisted all of the wires together and covered them with that blue painters masking tape. I had steam coming out of my ears ! Since then, I realized that every square inch of this car would need to be inspected for de-hillbillization. There is nothing worse than chasing wiring gremlins.

i dont think you should worry about the wiring harness just because some idiot wired the radio wrong?

The stereo wires give you a clear indication of the kind of person that owned the car. If he'll do that on the stereo wiring, well you get it. What it all boils down to is that I have never messed with fuel injection on a high performance level. It seems like in order to do fuel injection right, after you spend the thousands on putting it in, you have to break out another thousand or 2 to buy a computer to tune the computer. I am no Steve Jobs ! After taking another look at the harness, it has to go. There are several splices, bare wires, broken plugs, etc. The previous owner had also removed the 5 speed and replaced it with a Ford 4 speed from an earlier mustang. So the wires for the transmission are gone. So now the decision is whether or not to find another harness or just carb it. Thanks guys !

If you really want the fuel injection you should investigate a modern stand alone system that can be tuned and upgraded easier than the Ford A9L. Base your harness needs on that specific system. Call Adam at S&M and see what he recommends. He might just say use the stock stuff with XXX chip.
On the other hand. If this is just a play car, and you don't aspire to run a blower or turbo later, I would just carb it. Simple, clean, driveway tuneable and you don't need dyno time with every new combo or mod. Install your own A/F meter and learn how to tune your carb.

i had the same thing when i bought my car, i took all the bullshit the moron before did and replaced it with all new harness from cars i know/knew where good, bought some off ebay got the dash harness off mike bell (lol it was 105 in the back of mikes shop pulling that damn dash harness but well worth it) now my cars wiring is all factory and everything works perfect.

Well said heatmup, I am Holley savy and love the look of a clean engine bay. This car will only be driven every once in awile so I don't really care about fuel mileage. Mostly street driving but I am setting things up to run at mid-ohio occasionally. Greg, I wish I had the patience to search out cars for good wiring harnesses. Seems as though patience is in short supply as this is my 4th or 5th project going on at this time. The wires are coming out as we speak and I'm doing the last bit of dismantling before the whole car is shipped to the media blaster. What started out as replacing the fuel pump a year ago, has turned into a full on restoration. I will be updating my "projects in progress" thread shortly. Thanks for the expertise fellas.

Ok, I have decided to go carb. Would anyone that has done this before be able to tell me what changes I need to make to the wiring or anything else. Thanks.

Get a msd ignition system it's simple to wire and run 2 relay setups for the fuel system and electric fan it should all be on its own the only old wiring I would use would be switched 12 volt wires power the relays and ur done, use a one wire alternator the engine bay should be bare with a simple wire tuck
