I took a stock FRESHLY rebuilt 92 302 block and changed the e7 heads to brand new gt40p heads, put a used but good looking e303 cam in, a new 650 DP holley carb..... new autolite platinum plugs, bbk shorty headers.... the car ran fine with the stock motor.... but now it has no power at all... when you try to give the car any gas it spits and sputters until you back out of the gas..... the car still has the stock fuel lines but has a new filter and holley blue pump fuel pump..... dual line feed to carb. Any suggestions as to where to start? Timing, fuel, air? I think the timing is right around 13*

Just time it by ear, keep advancing it until it starts to ping and back it off a couple degrees. I would say it needs advanced or it's too far advanced one of the two

I don't know you so this might sound like a dumb question but did you use the H.O. firing order? It will run on the standard 302 firing order but have no power.

oh and yes im running the H.O FO even tried switching it to non ho to make sure that wasn't the problem... had that problem when I first got the motor didn't know anything about it, and it was back firing bad, ended up being the FO wasn't on the HO order...

whats the base timing set at?
the tfi dist has a locked advance with timing being controlled by the puter.
i dont think its gonna work for you.
you need a dist with mechanical advance like a msd or unilite etc.

Its either way the f#$%& outta time or somethings happened with the valves. Did u reuse the stock pushrods?

I would assume u have a 85 duraspark dizzy in it w steel gear? First are the valves too tight as in hangin open, check full advance w timing light not just base. Try around 36° total. Do u have msd purple/ green wires hooked to dizzy? Make sure u didn't cross them. Compression check? Fuel pressure level etc good?

I'm going to put this out there I know the guy and I'm pretty sure it's a duraspark dist. and it ran fine before he took it apart to change the heads and cam, he reused the stock pushrods on the p heads he installed and used stock bolt down rockers so all that should be fine, I think it is way out of time

thanks fiveoh... what he said is correct, I do have the purple and green wires, the car wouldn't start until they were on the right way.... do I need to take my vacuum hose off the dist. or the carb to set the timing? ive always timed them by ear... what if my battery is super low... like not holding charge at all... would that cause the MSD box to F*** up and not spark enough?

It shouldn't cause any problems unless the alternator isn't charging right, just try advancing or retarding the timing a little at a time to see if it makes a difference

I advanced it a good bit, and it helped a good bit, and sounds a lot better at idle... but still not great yet... it has a lot of miss when I give it gas real slow....

U sure dizzy was stabbed right? Not off a tooth or so

U don't need vacuum advanced hooked up period. Best way set up a duration spark is set it up on the 10L mechanical advance setting or if doesn't have it make gap. 351 bandit will be around 17-18° base 36 total. I played w one in mine till sheared the shaft from bushings not liking hi rpm. Eight way lose the vacuum an set it 36 full advance lock it down see wat it does.
