Seriously considering a 5.4 short block and my heads/ intake. I'm going to have my engine pulled and rebuilt anyway, so I was thinking about a 5.4, considering people see (reportedly) 40rwhp and around 90rwtq. But I can't seem to find any good write ups on them. Just a bunch of posts saying its "easy" and the exhaust hood clearance and intake adapter are the only problems. Does anyone know of a good write up about it? Or is it just that easy?

Personally I wouldn't go that route. IMO if you want to go bigger the best way to do it is with a FRPP Boss block. With a stroker crank you end up with either a 5.3 or a 5.4L and you have the added benefit of all the aftermarket support that exist for the 4.6 2V.

There are stoker kits out for that block that go as high as 5.1L (306 CID?) in a short search, may be more. With all the money and work in those heads it may be wiser to stroke the block and go that route than attempt a SB swap to a 5.4L in which your heads and intake may not fit up correctly. There are rebuild kits out for that engine block that are rated to 1000+ HP.

The Stroker kits are pretty expensive though. I can use my heads and cams an intake (with an adapter) an you can find the SBs for next to nothing. but "supposedly" the deck is a little higher and that's it. I'm just a little apprehensive about going with a big Stroker kit, after hearing friends that had oil delivery problems with their 347 kits. Plus not very many people are doing it. But that is why I'm wondering if its that easy. A lot of people TALK about doing it, but if it was simple, more people would ACTUALLY be doing it.

Kinda what I was thinking but I'd RATHER have 5.4. I didn't think about the extra piston speed associate with a Stroker. Plus I can buy a short block, put forged pistons and rods in it for less money than the Boss block (granted it won't be strong enough to handle ridiculous amounts of HP, but it would do well until I went FI.

if your going do do all that i would just find a low mile lighting engine it may cost less then a rebuild

hoods are over rated,but if you want one cowl hoods look better anyway and its not to bad if you can some how move the intake plenum

The deck height on the 5.4 is indeed taller which is why you need the apadter plates for the intake. With your top end on a 5.4L I doubt you will make power past 5K. Bigger cams would help some but the PI intake will likely become a big restriction then.

I've been hearing the plenum is a problem for it. Seems like an excuse to get a better one, lol. Or the Eaton Supercharger can take care of all that.

I've been hearing some discrepancies with the rotating assemblies on the lightnings. Some people say it's forged, some people say it isn't. I can get a balanced all forged rotating assembly for 2k if I can't find a complete lightning motor.

A lightning engine sticks way up through the hood. I don't think a 6" cowl induction hood would cover it.

Id love a Terminator, but people want an arm and a leg for those engines I could sell my heads to recoup some of the cost, but it's still expensive and I'd have 4 cams to buy, lol.

There not as bad as you think. You wouldn't have to buy cams they would come with the swap. You can find a lot of stuff on Corral and svtperformance.com. Its not just for svt vehicles.

If I wanted to upgrade it, I'd have to. I have this problem where I cant leave things stock and more cams equal more money. The only reason I'm thinking about a 5.4 is that I can use my heads. Otherwise I'm just going to stick with my engine and have a fully forged rotating assembly first and a turbo/blower put in later.

I'd like to see how much room is in the bay of a 5.4 2V car in person. too bad nobody (active) on here has one. At least that I know of...

The 5.4 swap isn't truly hard when it comes to swaps, the main difference is the deck height is taller, which is why you would need the intake adapters or new intake for the 5.4 from HPS. the other issue is the exhaust. Since it has a taller the deck height, the exhaust is wider. You have to extend and widen the mid pipe to connect with the manifolds. The motor bolts directly in and you may only have to extend some of the wiring but don't need to change any. Muscle mustangs or 5.0 magazine, had a pretty good write up on it where they did the swap.

Oh this is happening, lol. Hopefully this winter. I think I'll just have to throw it in there and then have someone weld an extension onto my h pipe. Time to start planning...
